Incredible India!
How unfair! This morning I was watching BBC again before work as usual; outside it's minus 8 centigrade and up comes the advert with warm and beautiful india making me feel colder and more depressed then ever for being stuck in cold Berlin
. How evil...Incredible India! |

"warm india" ...its so ironic. As of today ....all the news dailies have their headlines as : A bitterly cold waves sweeps through north india ! and the cold wave takes its toll ...xx number of people die ...

Blizzard
I saw a documentary a few weeks ago where they were talking about this big blizzard in 1996 that washed down south from the northern Him. region in the summer (I think it was the summer). Apparently alot of pilgrims on their way to the (is it the Shiva cave temple?) - well they got caught by the blizzard and since basically everyone was wearing short sleaves and summer gear over a 100 people died due to the snowstorm and cold and were shut off from the outside world for a week.
So I guess one should alway take winter wear along for a hike in the mountains even if it isn't way up north. |

It's not that it's soooo cold in degrees in Delhi, it is just that generally there is no central heating, and in many cases no heating at all. So you really feel it. Also many people live in inadequate housing, or out in the open and so are susceptible to hypothermia, particularly after dark. I don't think it bothers most tourists. If your room feels cold for sleeping, ask for a small space heater. If they don't have one, change hotels.

Hey......guys, cold in India is not to be compared with the cold in europe/uk! Indians, in general, feel more cold because they are used to the temperate climate and hence, there's more hype than usual. But to be on the safe side, carry your woolens while travelling in the north. The best bet would be to carry a hot water bottle with you, since hot water is freely available in all the hotels and, it works wonders if the heater is not provided!!

thanks a lot for all your advices.
but to be honest, I'm a little little bit "bitchy" about the weatherconditions. I never carried a woolens while travelling through india. I want to have nice warm weather and no thoughts about heaters and woolen socks and in South Germany it is so cold at the moment, I don't want only "15 degree more" in India... fortunately I'm going in 4 weeks to North India, maybe the weather is much better than. please! ![]() |

I was in Rajasthan in early Feb. 2 years ago and it was very warm during the day but quite chilly at night. I don't remember ever having a heated room and I was quite toasty in my bazaar bought blanket. ( The water bottle idea sounds ingenius though
). I was also in Allahabad in early January at the Kumbha Mela sleeping in an unheated tent. I remember it being cold ( one night I slept under my matress)but not so cold that people whould have frozen to death and there were headlines every day of it being "the coldest winter in history". So I agree with the assessment that most Indians are unprepared to deal with the cold since they are used to the heat. I found a woolen shawl invaluable to have with me at all times- it is warm when it unexpectedly gets cold- it isa blanket- a shield for the head from prying eyes- a pillow...you name it. Good luck!![]() |
