Is that acceptable in India?

I heard that we need to present the exchange certificate for some certain transaction, any rupees exchanged outside India will not be accepted?

Surely only Indians can bring Rupees back into India? Even that is only Rs 5000 or so I think.

I am surprised that you have found an exchange service that offers this outside India.

Sorry Im not very sure.

So is there a money changer in the Delhi airport?
That means we can't get rupees even in a local bank?

Residents can take Rs in or out of the country; you are right about the limit being 5,000.

wee_y_gor --- no-one is going to search you for small amounts, which you ought to be able to find in areas that have an Indian diaspora, but strictly you would be breaking the law. I've heard that exchange rates, when you find rupees outside India are not good.

So.... where should I change the rupee?

I will be staying at Paharganj area for the first night...
Is airport rate or money changer/bank rate better?

I can order Rupees from my bank or buy them at the Toronto Airport.
But the rate is much better in India, so I usually buy 1000 just in case, and get the rest in India.
I've never been asked if I'm carrying rupees when I enter India.

I see, have u been asked to fill in a "white card" when entering India? To declare something like amount of cash/rupee

It's easy to change into rupees when you arrive at the airport. Not necessary to bring in any rupees. They stay open 24/7 to change money & the rate is fair.

I don't think it asks how much cash you have.

Hal is dead on as rates are worse outside India. I carry a small hoard as I have found exchange offices deserted (although you can check under counters for sleeping employees. Never a problem. For the bulk of exchange I go to banks in town for the best (slightly) rate. I don't often stay at better hotels so I haven't needed certificates (cost extra at my bank). For that I just use plastic anyway..

Technically this isn't allowed but then again I always arrive with a couple of thousand rupees from the last trip. To date no problems to report.

Hi
Have I understood this right?
I cannot, officially, change sterling into rupees in England
prior to flying out.
We will arrive in the very early hours and therefore will have no local currency. Can you change in the hotel and is currency better than travel cheques?

Sorry. Seem to have sent this already.

With a tour. May not have opportunity or be too tired to change in airport

Correct, I was unable to find a bank or other exchange organisation in the UK who could change sterling for rupees even at a poor exchange rate. This is probably because it is not legal for non Indians to bring Rupees in or out of India.

If you live somewhere where there are banking services regularly used by Indians, they may be able to offer you some.
