I Pad...to buy or not to buy
I Pad...to buy or not to buy
Hi folks....
lost my I Pod recently.
Was planning to buy a new one when my friend suggested an I Pad. Now that they are availble in India (delhi) at a reasonable price was wondering if it was a good idea???
Will be using it for i-tunes...internet browsing...excel???

Are you interested in India's very own home-grown tablet: the Notion Ink Adam? I'm not, only because, sadly, I have no faith that the company will still exist in a year or two,
Otherwise, never mind Apple and Microsoft, the iPad killers are here now. Check out Samsung and Motorola Xoom. The latter might be my choice, except I can't actually think of a good reason to buy a tablet, and also feel that spending more on a portable device than I did on my desktop PC doesn't really make sense. Added to which, it would be easily droppable and eminently stealable.

never buy the first installment of a new apple product.
wait for them to tweak all the thingsgonewrong - then buy it the next year.
personally - the ipad is such a waste of everything, except good design.
much like the macair
i'd go for an ipod + a macbook pro + android samsung phone

Here's another one from India. I want an OlivePad!
It is still too much money to just go and buy one on a whim.
By the way, recent news developments have allowed me to consign another company to my never-buy list: Nokia. Who knows, might even be better with Windows: Symbian certainly drives me crazy. But, Microsoft in my pocket? No way!

First Smart phones were indeed Windoze
Today their % of market share ? 2-3 %
Remember cheap PeeCee clones came with windoze, so people used Micr$$$t. Note, Nokia took a 14% hit on their stocks. Nokia CEO claims that the company with get billions from MSFT... hmmmmm Smells like ISRO & DevDas deal to me

Me thinks the Nokia CEO is gone in a few months. With Elections round the corner in Finland and two of their private companies laying off more people ?

About the Nokia, Very true for me too. Very bad move in my opinion for Nokia.
However I don't think Nokia will abandon Symbian completely. Symbian will continue to be used in all except smartphones of Nokia.

There were mp3 players before there was ipod.
There were smart phones before there was iphone.
There were tablets, ereaders before there was Ipad.
All three were game changers. Of course one could buy a Table Computer from Microsoft for 10K

pinnaclecap,What version of iPad2 have you? In November I bought a 16GB iPad2 with 3G. I really like it but should have bought a 32GB model as mine sometimes runs short of available memory.
I started off running the iPad at home solely on 3G. Because some iPad functions are wi-fi only, I later bought a portable wi-fi router. This router is 3G also but the iPad runs faster through it than with its own 3G. The portable wi-fi router allows the iPad wi-fi only functions to work which was the main purpose.
I am still looking for a convenient way to use the iCloud for backup without squandering 3G data chunks. I have no other computers or iDevices to share data with.
As a long retired senior citizen, my iPad use is determinedly unproductive of content other than some messing about with tourist snaps. For me, any use of MS Office services would be cruel and unusual punishment, however I see that a new app, OnLive Desktop, available in USA only, provides for an iPad to be a remote screen for central server provision of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Reason: Clarity
I have the 64GB iPad2 (wiFi + 3G). Regrettably I am several million dollars short of being retired, so I use the iPad primarily for work; but am planning to put it to use on my upcoming Indian trip (extra photo storage, blog on the move, email, e-books, etc).
I think determining the iPad's usefulness is really a matter of which applications one chooses to run. (Just like a desktop PC - it's just a box of lights, what it does is determined by the software you run). From a work perspective I'm perfectly happy with mobile internet and email (work takes me around the State), notes to email, and the sheer portability of the thing - not to mention the fantastic battery life.
That said, I've only had it a few months, and haven't spent too long figuring out how else it can aid me.

I hear the 3 is coming out in March with HD, and other bells..
I have the base 16GB...no 3G.....I luv it, the kids luv it too. Wifi at home makes it a fun toy to play with. Proper use of MS excel would have been really good. FaceTime is another nice feature and with the latest OS4 (I think) messaging for apple users is free. I am not really not too tech savvy but next time will buy a 3G enabled one.
I haven't used the others but kindle is something I might like to look at especially since I like to read...fiction though....and am willing to lead a humble retired life so will not require the millions....a nice hdmi tv, a few gizmos, if lucky some golf, meditation...retire.
