Yes, one year ago in August 2004, I ventured through the portals of the greatest show on Earth – the world of Blogs. The initial footsteps were tentative. I had to test the ground beneath my feet as it were, interact with a totally new medium, receive comments from distant places and reply to them, add to my basket of knowledge. My evenings were occupied with this new found means of spending time, simultaneously sharing knowledge, exchanging views. As they say, learning never ceases, a person is a student till he breathes his last. Yes, with one foot in the grave, he learns the art of survival on the remaining one!
I began my journey with one blogsite, and then added several more to the list. I found a unique way to express myself; the concept was new. As my experience grew and I matured as a blogger, I withdrew from many of the sites because they were static ones. The traffic there was miniscule and, even though everyone was welcome, the sites were more or less confined to a few who held centre stage. In the course of the year, I made an interesting observation – the same blog elicited different responses from different regions of the same country apart from totally unbelievable responses from foreign sites. One of the sites where I contribute regularly, is terribly interactive, a thread started by a blogger takes weird turns and twists and remains available till eternity for others to revive them, should they feel inclined to do so. Fellow bloggers read each others works and comment – I have had my share of bouquets and brickbats. I have accepted all of them with equal grace. Some blogsites permit comments only by fellow members (indiamike.com, hindustantimes.com); others allow anyone to post a comment (indiatimes.com). In one of my posts in bogspot.com, which was my nursery, I made a mention of pakoras. An Irish lady taxi driver from Dublin asked me how to prepare it! Then there was the case of an idol maker of Bengal who posted a comment in one of my Blogs requesting me to let others know that the Durga idols, made of shola (a type of cork) by their group, have found a market in the States and are bound for America this year! Blogging is a wonderful pastime. It embraces all disciplines and is a method to vent one’s feelings, a medium where one is encouraged to share one’s thoughts with others and strive for excellence in one’s respective areas. It is also a platform where one discovers a new meaning in living. If you feel strongly about anything, blog it and get it out of your system, you will be surprised at the number of like minded people around you!
