Friends;
Can anybody tell me how I can enable my browser to display the Devanagari script on Indian web pages? At present I usually only see little boxes or nonsensical characters...

Go to your Control Panel. Click on Regional Options. Select all the languages from the Language Settings for the system. Alternatively, you can choose only "Indic" if you want only Hindi to be shown. You may need your Windows Installation CD to do this. You have to restart your comp for it to be effective. In case you want to be able to type in hindi, you have to change your keyboard settings similarly.
hmmm... I don't have an option for "Indic". In fact the only Asian language option I seem to have is Indonesian. I have Windows 98 if that matters. Also, I do have Hindi fonts and can type in script, but that seems to have no bearing on the browser.
lots of info on hindi fonts here too http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~malaiya/devafonts.htm
How to install Hindi font
Three steps:
1. download Mangal, a Hindi font
2. install it
3. reboot
Visit http://hi.wikipedia.org (Hindi version of Wikipedia) so see if the font intalled correctly. You must use Internet Explorer for viewing the page. Firefox is very bad when it comes to international language support.

Shaabaash! Thanx everyone! I installed the mangal font as soulfood suggested, but for some reason the font didn't work (just shows boxes). Then I installed the susha font via the link crvlvr provided and went to the wikipedia site via soulfood's link and it displayed! -Greg

Shabash, I used it and my mother in law, the Hindi teacher, said it didn't mean what I intended. Clarifications anyone..
shaabaash: splendid! wonderful! great! well done! ...please correct me if I'm wrong - I only know enough Hindi to be dangerous
I made my own keyboard map by just typing out all the keys in order, once with the shift key off and then again with it on.

At the bottom there is a picture of keyboard with Devnagri layout. See if this works for you.
