If you are around in major cities, there are a lot of 'internet cafes'. By far, they appear to be the best places from where to send / recieve emails.
If you stay at some star hotels, they usually provide internet. However, if you are travelling to India as a tousist (not as a business traveller), carrying a laptop is of no use.

Internet access is cheap but not up to HK standards. Also if you intend accessing HK sites many of them do not work especially if a password is needed.

VSNL by far seems to be the best here. I also use a Handspring Treo 600 with Orange which lets me check all my email accounts in HK and the US.

Don't bother carrying a laptop. Its easier using cafes or business centers especially if you plan to spend a lot of time on the road.
