How to avoid the Monsoon?

Hi people.

I've been reading through a lot of threads about the weather in India during the Monsoon season and i've gotta say that it kinda made me rethink about my trip. I don't mind rain but still, if it rains non-stop, my trip would'nt be as nice as it should.

I will be arriving in Mumbay on April 15th and will be leaving also from Mumbai on August 19th. I'm planning to basically do a round-trip of India and i was thinking that there must be some way to be behind or after the heavy rain in most of the country. Should i start going south, then east, then north and then west to return to Mumbai? Or should i do the opposite, going North, then east, then south and then west, then return to Mumbai?

Thanks for any inputs!

What cities are you planning to go? "south" is too general. for example, Bangalore does not get much rain but most of Kerala gets a lot, starting in June. If you list your cities, we might be able to help with a
"monsoon avoidance" schedule..

Well basically i plan to visit those major cities: (Keep in mind that i will also stay in other minor cities along the way)

-Mumbai
-Pololem
-Bangalor
-Kochi
-Madurai
-Karaikal
-Chennai
-Tirupati
-Hyderabad
-Puri
-Kolkata
-Darjilling
-Bodhagaya
-varanassi
-Allahabad
-Agra-Delhi
- (maybe Himachal Pradesh)
-Jaipur
-Jodhpur
-Ranthambor National park
-Pushkar
-Then back to Mumbai

So my real question is basically this: Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Thanks

Mamamia,

You are planning to visit India in what is perhaps the worst period for a tourist : peak summer and monsoon !

Better postpone it to October, if you really wish to enjoy the country and especially so if this is your first visit to India.

Yeah i know that the monsoon can get pretty bad there but the thing is that i can't really make it another time. I've always wanted to see India and that may be my last chance for a trip this long. So if i have to deal with rain, that's alright ( altough, i do not think it will rain during all my trip if i plan my schedule carefully). After looking at some charts, i beleive that if i start my trip in india from mumbai counter clockwise, i may be able to precede heavy rains. What do you think?

mammamia,

thats a lot of cities.. Here is a link to the rainfall by month. Hope it helps you plan.

For example, for the month of June bangalore gets around 65mm of rain and Bombay 645mm. I think you will be ok if the rainfall for the month is less than 100mm. But its possible that all the rain for the month could some down during the 2 days that you spend in that city! You won't be able to escape the rain altogether. the rain does cool things down and makes the temprature more bearable.

crvlrv: Thanks for the link mate. Checked it out with the my itinerary and basically the only time where rain will pour over 150 is in Darjelling and in the Calcutta region. So i don't think that rain will be that much of a problem if i play my cards right. Plus the rain always make mother nature more beatifull and green...

I do not clame to be a professional meteorologist of India, but i do believe that having looked at quite a few tables, charts and such that it is possible to travel in inda during the monsoon and avoid the really heavy rain. You are going to see some hard rain for sure, but it will not be non stop. Counterclockwise is the key...

You really do not have an option, then !! Okay, do visit, but take the crowds, climate, weather and delays in your stride!!

All the best !!

The great thing about this trip mate is that i really don't have anything to do back in Canada until January so if things get delayed, it's not gonna be the end of the world. I will just have to enjoy India's beauty for a longer time. Damn... That sucks... lol

thanks for the wishes dude!
