Hi WWUSA, this will be my second trip to Iran - here's some pics from the last one (including Persepolis!).

Congrats - I envy you just a little because you will be experiencing India for the first time - whatever you read here or elsewhere can never fully prepare you. You will remember your first day there for the rest of your life!!

Maybe(one will hope ) you won't be arriving in the midst of political chaos as I did when I first arrived in Nepal, a virgin to the subcontinent, the day after the entire royal family was shot, but it will still be unforgettable, in a good way!! I remember my most memorable impression of my ride from the airport was the cows and buffalo in the street...

Exactly. Same here. My first Day in Delhi was frightening and absolutely wonderful at the same time. I thought I was prepared, but I wasn't...

BTW, I'll be going in exactly 3 weeks from now. My first time India after 10 years!! I'm so excited to finally go back! 10 weeks of chaos and bliss.

Thanks for the good thoughts! People always talk about the first ride from the airport as absolutely blowing their minds! I'm arriving at 2am in Chennai and plan on hanging out there till the sun starts coming up so I can have my own memorable first ride.

I am actually really looking forward to the whole cow in the road thing. I grew up on a ranch and I love cows!

Do you mean you're waiting at the airport until dawn?

Sorry, but, depending on where you are staying, you might make it to your hotel without seeing a cow --- they are not supposed to be in the central area of the city. So go straight there, get some sleep, and go cow seeking in the morning

The city has a special charm at 2.00am, anyway, and what traffic there is on the road will go quite fast.

I'm leaving my house in less than 7 hours and I'll be landing in Mumbai May 2. I'm so nervous and excited, I can't fall asleep so am desperately browsing IM for more info (as if I haven't done that practically every single night since this ludicrous plan popped into my brain).
Just wanted to quickly thank this great site. It's been much help. Hopefully, I'll be able to reciprocate when I return.

Well, that's my (current ) romantic idea for my first sunrise in India: a ride through Chennai at dawn!

But I'll see how I feel when I actually arrive and remember your kind resident's recommendation, and perhaps I'll enjoy the sunrise from my hotel.

Smile Aiight!!!

Just booked my ticket last night! Leaving 23 June JFK-LHR; 4 days in London, LHR-DEL, going up to Ladakh via Amritsar, then back to Delhi - KTM, then Pokhara; paragliding over Himalayas, Jomsom flight, then on horseback to Mustang; then Delhi to Helsinki August 18 for 11 days in Finland!

To ensure that this post isn't just a flight of vanity inspired to instill resentment within others, I'll offer some information that I've discovered: American Airlines has a partnership with British Airways and with FinnAir, and much cheaper to book directly than through agents.!

RA...

Four days in London? That's a bit adventurous! Have you checked out all the necessary vaccinations, special clothing, etc etc...
