How do you put on a dhoti?

I have a dhoti and have no idea how to put it on, I would appreciate some advice.

I want to play a joke on some friends who keep saying that I'll return from India one day looking like Gandhi, but if the dhoti falls off, the joke could well be on me.

I looked around on the internet for some dhoti instructions...no luck. Like saris, you'll probably need some help from a local, as the visual lesson is better. My husband "got wrapped" on our last trip, and now he's always wearing them around the house...and I'm so happy! They don't seem to ever fall off him...so Steven, be brave and put one on.
We all still want to see you in one......

Agree with edsita. Local assistance in this case is the best, nay, only solution!

For extra security, you can wear a regular belt around your dhoti and fold the top fabric over so it doesn't show.

Quick, patent the idea before someone else does.

I've commented elsewhere that one of the most romantic things an Indian girlfriend can wear on the chain around her neck is the pin from her sari. The sound of velcro being undone, on the other hand, could quite spoil the moment...

still, it would be a big help to women who dont quite know how to drape a sari. also top quality velcro dont make much sound.
