I've found a hindi language institute:

www.hindiguru.org. I am not sure if I'll be able to join any time soon because it seems all the classes starting in the short term are during the day when I'm working. I was a bit discourage by the prize, but once I did the math it seems it is cheaper than a private tutor by the hour.

Have you found anything? It is still probably cheaper just to higher a tutor and split it among ourselves.

thoughts?

Indian equivalent to Usha Jain's Intro to Hindi Grammar

Hi there everyone! I am trying to learn Hindi and I saw several recommendations for Usha Jain's Intro to Hindi Grammar. I have done some searching and sadly have been unable to find it here in India. Can anyone suggest something similiar that I can buy here? I have Snell's Beginner's Hindi and found the complete Hindi course online for sale here as well but I thouht that I would get a grmmer book as well. I have found several other grammer books but I am unsure how they would compare and since I can't just go to the bookstore and check them out, I want to be sure I get something good
Thanks for your suggestions.
April

Hello Piyush_Indian
I am travelling to Varanasi next month, and I was wondering if your offer to share information about good Hindi teachers is still on.
My intent is to spend at least 1-week studying Hindi, and would like to do it with a good teacher.

Thx in advance

Hey folks,

I can recommend a excellent Hindi teacher in Varanasi. His name is Pinku, he's a very bright and friendly guy in his 30s, works for the students exchange programm of Benares University, and is thus very experienced in giving crash courses to foreigners. (He is actually just writing a crash course-book for travellers!)

I only spent five days in Varansi, so he designed a 5-hour-crash-course for me, and that worked out just great:
Thanks to his help I was able not only to learn the most important phrases, but also mastered basic grammatical structures. Thus I was able to say almost anything (supposed of course I had enough time to look up the words and think a little about the correct structure of the sentence

With this ability India was a blast - Indians were astonished already when I was able to use some traveller phrases, but when I started to struggle through a "normal sentence" (e.g. asking them how many children they have), they were seriously stunned! Never before I experienced so much hospitality, curiosity and friendliness...

So, the name of my teacher is Ajay "Pinku" Pandy, his email pinkupandey(at)yahoo.co.in . He lives near Assi Ghat in Varansi, and besides he teaches you Hindi, he can tell you a lot about Varansi and the Hindu culture...

Also thanks to him Varanasi is now one of my favourite places in the world.

So if you plan to stay in Varansi, and have a couple of days time: Contact him, and learn some Hindi. Its well worth it!

Thanks for that write-up, Tsuno. There's a Hindi course coming up next spring in a local neighborhood center of mine (in The Netherlands), 10 classes over a month or so, so I figured what good is that gonna do me, esp. since I'll be unlikely to get much daily practice afterwards.

Your story has strengthened my resolve to just do it though It's affordable and informal too, so little harm done if it doesn't do me much good either way. If I go for it, I'll let you guys know later how I liked it!

Jaswinder was #2 on my Landour list.

Some more searches:
When there, it was generally agreed that the worst teacher was H***b. - bijapuri
The only teacher I'd reccomend you don't opt for is Habib as he is a good table tennis player but pretty useless at teaching. - beebah
By the way, last year ['06], one Monday morning the whole place was astir, and Habib and Dinkar both absent, because Habib-ji had run off with Dinkar-ji's daughter, who had been working in the office. - NonIndianResident

So, perhaps that parody of a teacher Habib is no longer a problem.
