HELP... I need a translator
This is a plea to any Hindi speakers in the forum. When I was in Varanasi it was a busy time for wedding pujas and there was a lot going on down at the main ghat. One day a protester came down with a sign and a written hat and then he started writing on a wall. One of the priests (for those who have been to Varanasi - the nice one with the beard who always sets up for the evening puja....it's his son who performs the pujas now as the father has a bad back) tried to explain it all to me but I couldn't quite clarify it.... I think he was protesting against the dowry system but it may have been something else. Anyway, I took a photo of him so can you have a look and tell me what he was writing:

He is not actually protesting, he is trying to create awareness towards some women issues in India and speaking of gender equality.
But I like Rab's translation..... ![]()

what he's actually writing is
hare nari, hare nari, nari hare hare durga ka roop... ~ hare: the devotional energy of god nari: women durga ka roop: in durga's image (manifestation) ~ its a sort of mantra/chant to women along the lines of hare rama, hare rama, rama rama hare hare, (or hare krishna etc) ~ on the placard behind him, the first two lines say" jeena hai to marna seekho: "to live, one must learn to die" and then something about teaching the country to save the women i think. my hindi is awful. no doubt somebody else will be able to shed more light. ~ the board above says something like "not accepting dowry is equivalent to an act of god" (again very tentative) nice pic btw. |

Thanks for the information....much appreciated. Mmm, the prize? Might have to be a "virtual" prize. Or a masala dosa the next time I'm in India. Anyway, THANKS.
