Thumbs up Durga Puja...

Hi friends,

Lovely thread, Ann. Thank you.
Best wishes for Durga Puja – the biggest festival of West Bengal. Those who are new to Kolkata you are going to experience a different look of this city. Well, you may not like the sound of loud speaker, crowd, traffic jam but I am sure you are going to love the spirit of people – the joy – the smiling face !!!! Come on friends…… any special plan during this episode?

Well, I am not going on vacation this year. So only “adda” and rest. BTW, I have a small plan to go to Taki in Vijaya Dashami. Here the border between India and Bangladesh becomes free (though BDR and BSF will remain alert) in river Ichhamati where hundreds of boats from both the countries will meet and image of Devi Durga undergoes "Bisarjan" or immersion in the river. I’ve never seen this spectacular ceremony there. So just thought this year I’ll be able to do it. The crisis of boat is a very common problem but I’ve managed to reserve one in advance.

Cheers.
Somnath

Wishes reciprocated!

My advice, during this Navaratri period, is to get yourself invited into a home, maybe a fairly traditional Brahmin home, and see the kollu, the dolls, and the way they decorate their houses and celebrate in the evenings.

This is true for Southern India: You guys uo North do the same thing?

Shashank, this thread will be all about festivals in different cities during this period. My objective to start this thread was to let the NRI friends know which are the good places to go around this time.

Navratri is all for Dandiya & Durga Puja is for Pandals. Now Nick has come with a new traditions... I never knew of it. Would like to read more about it.

Nick Please share your experience. What sort of dolls they used to decorate their homes... What food they serve? Do you have any picture to share?

Thanks somnath. Why only adda. Don't you like to hang around those beautiful pandals. I know traffic sucks but when you see those beautiful pandals , everyone feels happy. Wow Taki sounds so great especially the Bisarjan of Lord Devi Durga from two countries.

Ann... I would if I could, but I am away from home and don't have access to all the pics and pic-sizing software there. I only have a few pics, but I do have some. The food is just, I think, ordinary S. Indian food.

A set of nine (or maybe five or seven, if smaller-scale) is made, and all sorts of small scenes, both religious and secular, are set out in papier mache dolls. You might well find a cricket match or music concert there!

Try google for kollu or gollu --- or one of our Tamil speakers might tell us how to spell it!

Gosh! It must be a Southern thing, then! It is so easy for those of us that only know one part of India well to assume that something is universal!

Here is something about it found from Google.

Thanks Nick for letting us know this beautiful tradition in South India. Yes, I gave a search in Google Image -- "kolu dolls" and "`navarathri kolu'" and lot of beautiful dolls came up as a search. And they are really very beautiful.

Please have a look to the pictures: http://www.indiatastes.com/festivals...ri/durga.shtml

Nick, when your get back to home, then please don't forget to share the pictures with us.

I must say this thread is working... Next time in my visit to Chennai I will definately look for this dolls & get few for my homes.

Ann; if you come to Chennai just before Navaratri, you will find vast numbers of these dolls for sale. Places that I know are the streets around Kapaliswara Temple, Myalapore, and Khadi Gramadiog Bhavan in Anna Salai, who will have big upstairs room devoted to dolls small and large.

I took a couple of IM visitors there this time last year: they were really delighted that they could buy small Ganeshs for a few rupees!

Traffic in all the cities becomes hell in any of the festival. Navratri is one of the popular festival In India & so people forget about traffic & simply enjoys the festival.
