I would like to ask possibly a silly question but what is "Dussehra"? I could look up my guide but I am enjoying reading on IM at the moment.

Try "Vijaya Dashimi" --- but there are several threads on Navaratri here on IM.

I'll leave details to the really knowledgable here (like eg those born and bred Hindus...) but I hope what follows is broadly correct...

It is the day after the nine nights of NavaRatri, which is festival of worship of the female aspect of God (you'll find Durga Puja threads here too)

Sunilg mentions Ram and Ravan: Vijaya Dashimi is the celebration of the victory of good over evil.

It is an auspicious time to begin anything to do with music or knowledge (Saraswathi being in charge) and many a music student will play their first notes in their first class, or will reaffirm their relationship with their teachers.

Thank you Shimla: Namascaram to you and to all IMers.

Here's a short explanation for you...........

Dassera day is considered a most auspicious day. It is a time-honoured belief that if any new venture is started on this day, it is bound to be a success. Hence, all the undertakings, be it laying-in of foundation of a new building, opening of a new commercial establishment or even initiating a child into the world of learning- are started on this day. Also on this day implements of agriculture, manufacturer's machines, the intellectuals pens, the household articles, the children's school books are placed before the idol of Durga and worshipped.
