Guide Books
Guide Books
I have just decided to get my guide books up to date, and bought 2 of the big fat ones.
Despite their being bigger and fatter, I find they are tending to concentrate more on the 'popular'places to visit, and neglecting some of the smaller 'gems'.
My guide books vary in age from 1990 to 2000, apart from the recent purchases.
I only found about the fascinating Banni villages, Kutch , Gujerat, through a guide book,[1994] no mention in the recent edition. I was stoned , visiting one village.
They were not very good kids at throwing, would not have had a job as an extra on Lagaan, and only after the intervention of a kindly man reached the bus stand.
However the internet has revolutionised search for info, but initially you have to know your requirements.
Also in Tamil Nadu I find less information available.
However if you go to local bookstores a wealth of books await, albeit written for English speaking Indians........ the lack if indexes in such publications do frustrate me however, thank god for post it notes.

I'm reading Eyewitness Travel Guide India and it's not bad at all. It has the out of the way places too,lot of pictures, like even pictures and descriptions of the foods by region. Also has a lot of history. My sister's sending me another guide which I'll receive in a few days and I'll let you know how it compares.
