Anyone know of any laid back, quiet bars- not "posh, luxury or 5-star" hotel bars, where we can get a quiet beer? The hotels are beautiful, but a little more upscale than we are (and pricey! every beer costs Rs 300!) We're in Vasant Kunj, but we like exploring...

Thanks and come have a beer with us!

there are plenty in the vasant vihar market...there is a place called hash, there are many in saket market..and happy hours are usually till 8pm where its buy 1 get 1 free....

beer in regular hours costs about 120-130 rupees, if you like good food and cheap beer, head to the defence colony market where you can go and eat and drink at Gola's sizzlers

That's a great question. I'm not so sure there is an easy answer. To me, ambience is everything when having a cold one and the 5-stars do that part of the equation up very nicely - good munchies, satellite sports etc.- albeit for a healthy surcharge! Alot of the lesser drinking establishment have something very scary for a western traveller - warm beer ! We found that if we didn't feel like splurging at a 5-star or there wasn't a party happening, it was better just to buy some brew, chill to our approval and just have them on our balcony/terrace!
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

Sounds good! - would like to get some ideas - do these spots have the imported beers as well or just Indian beer?

Hash is perhaps good for drinks but not for dancing. Neighbouring Bacchus behind Yo!China was much more livelier and better but on my last visit to Delhi (in the beginning of December) I found this disco bar in turmoil of changing hands - owners changed by fall and the bar was undergoing renovation. Hope it will spring back into action soon. Price of Kingfisher was around 100Rs that is little cheaper than in Hash.

Go to DV8 next to Regal cinema in CP. Very nice cozy place, old world sofas, good hard bound interesting books, chess boards etc.
The coctails are great here. The menu is limited but the food is very good. Try Amritsari Macchi with beer. This is fish marrinated in a typical Punjabi massala & them bater fried. Try the sirloin pepper steak excellent.

go to Basant Continental Jaypee hotel, Tapaz bar and u will be surprise.

Their beer is only 138 nett and one for one before 7pm . Look for the bar supervisor Manog or Manav. Both of them are very friendly.

Tapas at the Vasant Continental is the EXACT place that charged me Rs.300 for a beer on Saturday... hmmm... Well, next time I'll make sure to mention Mr. Manog or Manav (Tapas is the only place in Delhi I know that has Salsa dancing, my other favorite past-time!)

Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Must be just an Aussie/Canuck beer drinking stipulation to have those Wobblie Pops brain numbing cold before imbibing.

Even in 5-star hotels I find I send alot back for being a bit on the tepid side!

New Friends Colony..

Ok I know it's a little far away, but New Friends Colony has lots of places with nice ambience where you can have a couple of cold ones and very good food at reasonable prices. I can mention:
- Nothing Authentic
- Moksha
- Pebble Street
- Ego (The Ego Empire - they have 5 or 6 restaurants within a radius of 150 m - go for the one next to Pebble Street though)
- Mystique Heights (on the floor over Nothing Authentic, have never been there myself, heard good about the place though)
- The Mezz

All these spots are located in New Friends Colony Centre, near D-Block and the Crowne Plaza..
