Howdy all!
Am just 3 weeks from ETA Ma India! Completely overexcited BUT facing a real dillemma which only seasoned/ well meaning forumites can help me with, I assume. SOOO, I was planning A trip from last week of Feb, through to the 2nd week of May. My Route is loosely thus: Mumbai-Udaipur-Ajmer-Jaisalmer-Mumbai-Chennai-Pondicherry-Kerala (Somewhere!)-Kochi-Ooty-Panjim/Arambol-Mumbai-Delhi- Next Half.. Simla-Dharamsala/Mcleodganj-Manali-Rishikesh-Corbett Nat. Park- Kanpur/Lucknow (Raj history etc.)-Darjeeling-Kolkata Then on to Thailand/ Laos/ Vietnam NOW the dillemma and questions: 1. Is this too ambitious? I do want to cover a lot, but do not want to do it so hard that it becomes a chore! Please remember the weather factor in this time period!! 2. If it is too ambitious, Would the Northern or the SOuthern Itinerary be best? (Rajasthan would be included in both) 3. On the Northern Itinerary, what is the travelling mode of transport likely to be, and if one were to look at a map, is this the best route to take to get to Kolkata by the end of the trip? 4. Can anyone recommend other stops on the Northern Itinerary as well as favourite guesthouses etc. 5. Where is a good place to stay in Mumbai on the night I arrive (1-2 nights only) Approx $15 rate? As ever, all help would be greatly appreciated guys. PS ( If I wanted to go to Sri Lanka, from South India, where is the best place to do it from?) Thanx. ![]() |

I sugest you omit South India and follow this route :
Land at Mumbai. Mumbai-Udaipur-Jaisalmer-Ajmer-New Delhi-Varanasi-Lucknow-Corbett-Rishikesh-Shimla-Kullu-Manali-Dharamsala/Mcleodganj-Delhi-Kolkata-Darjeeling-Kolkata. The above will keep you occupied for two months. You can exit to Bangkok from Kolkata in last week of April. Alternatively, if you can brave the summer, you can move South from Kolkata in last week of April and spend two weeks in the South (Kerala/Chennai) and exit to Colombo/Bangkok from Chennai.

My only advice is that ALL TRAVEL including planes takes a long time so don't put too much in the itinery. I found buses to be the best and most reliable.
Fog delays trains and planes. Planes may sound like they are direct but they actually stop in every city along the way. Trains are great if no fog but again you can be looking a 5-9 hour delays. And of course, you just don't realise how big the country is until you get there |
