Genealogy. Resources and Tools.

What tools and archives would be available in India for people tracing ancestors who left say in 1890s 1900s ? I have talked to folks in surinam,guyana etc who maintain kind of a registery.

But in India ? What if any records exist at the ports of exit ? Bombay, Calcutta,Madras etc ?

You may try the Pandas in Religious towns like Haridwar, Benaras etc. There used to be (and still is) a tradition among most hindus to record the names of their ancestors and additions to the pre-recorded genealogy whenever visiting such towns.

I found birth record of my ancestor (grandfather) in one of the churches here in HYD. One of the crucial document in my quest for OCI.
