Fund-less UK national stranded in India

Fund-less UK national stranded in India
Kullu (HP) November 13, 2004 2:18:26 PM IST

A British national, who was earlier convicted for travelling without valid travel documents, is staying put despite being released from prison due to a lack of funds.

Thomas Forbes Marshal was arrested by the Kullu police after it was discovered that he had no travelling documents.

"He was arrested under the Foreigner's Registration Act because he was found without travelling documents. He served his term and was released. Upon his release, the court ordered him to be deported back to United Kingdom. Now, we have had some trouble in deporting him back because the British embassy has refused to bear his air ticket expenses. Now, we are trying to find out a way of arranging an air ticket for him," said Anand Pratap Singh, the Suprintendent of Police, Kullu.

Thomas is staying in the Manali police station and says that he does not want to go back to his country because of some of the policies there, which he doesn't agree with.

"I am against some of the policies practiced by the government, so I prefer to stay here at the moment. I am hoping that the Indian government arranges for my visa, but rather than going to the West, at this moment I would rather stay here. I do not agree with the British policies, I would rather stay here. If I go back and speak of these policies, there is danger to my life", Marshal said. (ANI)

The last part of our stranded tourist's quote suggests possible mental health problems to me. Many people criticize their government in the UK without fear for their lives, and I'm sure this young man will be treated no differently than anyone else, at least with regards to his free speech rights.

I'm not entirely sure why he is concerned for his safety for expressing his political views. Last time I checked the UK was a fully functioning democracy and not Nazi Germany or modern Zimbabwe.

Peddling Kulu's chief produce is any day a more tempting proposition than returning and having to work for the next Asia trip I suppose. Dodgy sorts are always fundless AND passportless.

Out of curiosity does anybody know anybody who's ever got assistance from a British mission overseas ?

you have to be kidding

How can a UK citizen even consider applying to stay in a country under the disguise of some sort of refugee "clause/status". Look at India, it is a mess, half of the population not only living in poverty, but without any basic ammenities. Unless an extreme circumstance occured where he was mugged/attacked or injured, there is no reason for a westerner to be travelling around with no passport/identity or money. Something very fishy about this story. Maybe one too many Bhang shops. It really discredits genuine cases for political assylum. HEY... Call your family.

If he does have mental health problems, which is probably the case, why do some of you say insulting things about him? Why should he be thrown in jail? Do you insult & laugh at disabled people when you see them?

Why should mental health problems be any different from any other disability? It's not his fault! I know of a couple of people who were perfectly nice & normal people then one day for no apparant reason (no they didn't take any drugs!) lost it and were acutely paranoid & delusional from then on. Some of the posts here are really heartlessly cold and ignorant

Well said, Ozric! This thread is beginning to sound a bit like a British tabloid newspaper!

Personally, I have my doubts as to whether Mr Marshal has any mental health condition. I would hope if there was evidence of a condition then the British High Commission would be more sympathetic and helpful.

I wasn't thinking he's mentally ill, more a case of angling for a free holiday.
