Flat Stanley

Oy. I leave this thursday morning. Yesterday the whole family stopped my to say goodbye. (6 sibs plus spouses plus nieces and nevvies...a full house.) One of my little nieces gave me something she made at school called "Flat Stanley". It's basically a paper doll which I am supposed to take with me, photograph in various places and send back to her at school--along with postcards and other memorabilia. She has been holding onto it for 2 months...an eternity for a child...just to be able to give it to me and nobody else. Too cute. I told her I would get him his own seat on the plane. We speculated on what he might eat--flat bread and flat noodles mostly. How he sings--flat, of course. How he'll be wanting to rent a flat in London at some point. And how when he uses the toilet it comes out as confetti and spit balls. She is 7...and I guess I'm not much older!

I am completely exhausted. Haven't slept well in weeks. In addtiion to getting--rather TRYING to get-- ready for India, I've spent 5 days in San Fran (where, by the by, I got my 10 year visa with amazing ease) and am also preparing for a photo exhibition I will be having in April...when I'm gone. NOTHING is finished. I am NOT ready and am feeling irritable and panicky.

Whew! Man it feels good to get this out! Thanks for listening indiamikers!

I have this stuffed dog and I would take pictures of him everywhere we went (including India). I was in Independence Hall in PA when the security guard posing with the dog told me all about Flat Stanley.

The students are going to LOVE seeing flat stanley in India

Have a great trip!

Unfortunately, I am not bringing a digital camera. But I will definitely search one out and try to post something up. Maybe Flat Stanley wearing a turban and/or lungi?? Flat Stanley in various yogic postures? Big fun!

he'll be wanting to rent a flat in London at some point
If you do make it to London take him the the big home furnishings warehouse Ikea - he'll love all the FLATPACK FURNITURE...

Hope you allow him a little spending money, we wouldn't want him to be FLAT BROKE...

If you rent a car get Stanley to check the spare in case you get a FLAT...

Encourage Stanley to socialise, maybe he can find you a FLATMATE...

If you ever need a compliment to cheer you up, get out Flat Stanley, he is bound to be able to FLATTER YOU...

Don't get separated at the airport, we wouldn't want you be left FLAT-FOOTED...

If you run short of cash on your trip find Stanley a job, he'll work FLAT OUT for you...

Don't feed him too many FLAT PANCAKES otherwise he may get FLATULENCE...

...etc!

Rob...groan!

Julie! I know! I will try to call you tomorrow.

I JUST finished packing. It all fits in there, but don't ask me if I can lift it! I may try to weed out some more stuff. It's so hard! I looked at the weather for Darjeeling today. 75 during the day. 35 at night! How is someone supposed to prepare for THAT?? Plus, I'll be there for at least 9 months, which means monsoon, summer, winter...everything. Plus I am a tall woman and so cannot count on getting shoes my size. I know I can have clothes made.etc. etc. etc.

Every time I pack to go away I am amazed by the great yogis of the past who travelled all over with almost nothing. Even today, there's a magnificent Lama called Alak Zenkar Rinpoche who teaches at Columbia in NY--he travels with one small carry on bag. ONLY.

Ah well...maybe after a few more years of practice???

Flat Stanley rode on the St. Vincent's ambulance with us once (it was sort of a "take your daughter's paper doll to work day" for one of the medics). Unfortunately, we ended up having to work him up as a cardiac arrest... his EKG was flat-line.

He was a very difficult intubation.

When you get the film developed, just check the photocd box and pay the extra $2 to get the photos digitized. If you are developing the photos in India, it's probably just as easy there as well.

Have a good trip.
