Had been to Shillong many time. Quite a nice place with less tourists. Nice weather specially in winter. Nice place for shopping too. Good place to stay.

Thumbs up Shillong

Nice place. SHILLONG CLUB is a great staying option, safe and food is just great. If you are going to stay there don’t forget to try Bamboo shoots preparations.

Yes I agree with Somnath, the Shilong club is a good place to stay. Keep in mind that shops, bars & restaurants close early. Visit the Orchid gardens. I think I stopped to take in a lake on the way to Shilong from Gauhati. Very beautiful & I remember a thin mist lay spread over this lake.

Shillong is well worth a visit, though make sure you eat early, or stay in a hotel with a restaurant, as the whole city closes down about 8pm. There are museums and various things to do, and the MTDC Tourist Office runs coach tours of the highlights - this is useful, as the sights are quite spread out. A trip to Mawsynram might be of interest if you want to tell friends that you have been to the wettest place in the world !! (Mawsynram's rainfall has recently overtaken Cherrapunj, with over 20 metres in one year!)

Tim in Ireland.

Yes you are correct jyotirmoy , it is the famous Badapani Lake ( Umiam Lake ) the gateway to Shillong. The lake is simply beautiful . There is a Govt. Hotel there at the bank of the lake . Some water sports is also done in the lake . Fishing is very popular too in that lake.

Thanks ddutta for the name of the lake I think I was told the Badapani name not the Umiam. I imagine how beautiful it would be to stay at the hotel you have mentioned. Early morning mist....
