Not sure if this is the correct English spelling:

"Chalo" (Lets go!)

Heard it many times on my first night bus to Goa from Bombay.

Off topic a bit - I remeber when I first arrived in India I bought an "Om" T-Shirt. I asked a guy what it meant. He replied "Thursday" which really confused me for a while!

Hey - I was 18 young and stupid!

Chris.

Toda toda chini -- less sugar please (actually: [very] little sugar)

How it came about: my friends who wouldn't shut up about their recent India trip inspired me to go in the end & taught me some handy stuff.

Don't try. It comes naturally at some point. It also goes away naturally...

Talking

My first two words were bahut mahanga or very expensive. An astute Indian colleague taught me that little hindi cum bargaining chip! No matter what price the tout/hawker/dealer demanded/suggested/uttered/threatened ................ I just kept repeating that two-word mantra until they asked me angrily to leave their shop or they left their own shoporsteam blew out their ears or they broke down crying and said "as you like sir!"
