Famous People you have met in India

Rob The Pom's Cricket XI thread reminded me of a couple of things from my last visit to India in late 2001.

I was in Chennai and went to dinner at the Sheraton Hotel in Chennai and met Kris Srikkanth, the Indian cricketer. He was hosting "Lucky 7" on a card table for a charity fund raiser. I have a photo somewhere.

Later on that same trip I met England cricketers Ashley Giles and Richard Dawson in a Mumbai street. They were looking for the Cafe Leopold and I sent them off in the direction of Colaba Causeway!

Who have you met (or just seen) in India who is famous? For the record we will include the flight there and back ('cos you always see famous people on 'planes, yeah I know ... Kelly Osbourne, Terry Venables, Barry Davies etc etc).

So who have you seen or met in India?

Red face

Zahir Khan (the cricketer - not sure about the spelling) in my office in Delhi. He even spoke to me! I was sitting outside warming in the Delh's 40C heat (vs chilly 12C inside) having a chai and he stepped out of the building, looked at me and said "coffee break?"
I only learnt his name and profession when he left. before, i only saw him posing for a photo with our office guys.

the whole India cricket team got together for one of their weddings last year right after the India-Pak cricket match. the wedding was celebrated in the hotel where I was staying.

despite having been to South Asia quite a bit in the last 12 months I still haven't acquired interest for cricket... i remember sitting in the living room in my friend's house in Karachi, with him and his mother, and with cricket on TV. my friend dosed off and i asked his mother (hoping to switch the channel to something else) "do you understand cricket?" and she replied "oh yes, I do like watching it very much". Oh well I thought, I'll go fetch a book

I'm pretty sure I sure Richard Gere in McLeod Ganj.

I'm sure it was him. What convinced me was the fact that the local rodent population looked terrified.

I saw Richard Gere in McLeod Ganj at the old "Khanna Nirvana" restaurant. Not sure if it's re-opened yet. I also saw JFK Jr. ("John-John") at the Dalai Lama's temple. Soon after he died in that plane crash.

we met a man who holds the world record for floating in non salty water. he was great. met him on the boat to see the buddha in hyderabad. he said tony blair was 'a great man' (i thought 'you're welcome to him mate' to myself), showed us his newspaper clippings (which he convieniently had on him), thought i was chinese (i'm english through and through), and asked for our autographs. he was cool.

I saw John Wright at 'The Only Place' in Bangalore when India were playing Australia in Bangalore.

Anyway, he stopped and had a chat which was nice.
