Sorry Somnath, I haven't even seen it myself, the cousin in question currently lives in Korea and we haven't seen him since we got married ten years ago - typical western family! We only found out about the sword when it came up in conversation with an aunt shortly before we left for India - it didn't mean a whole lot to us at the time as we knew so little about India anyway. We did however, get the impression that it was something of a family secret, because of it's importance as a historical artifact.
I really will try to find out what I can about it. |

This poll reminds me of the set of little "Indian Politicians" figures I bought in the Toy Department of the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on my last visit. When I returned to the States, I was showing them to a friend over breakfast in a cafe and I could only identify Gandhi, Nehru, Mrs. Gandhi, and Bose (there was no label saying who was who), so just then our Punjabi waitress swung by to refill our coffee cups, so I asked her -- and she couldn't do any better than I did!
Then I remembered a newspaper story I'd read when I was in India about the cover of a new phone book somewhere (Delhi? I can't recall ...) that showed pictures of "famous Indians" without identifying who they were. Apparently people were griping about it because they didn't know who half the people were. I mean, they might have recognized their names, but apparently a lot of people had never actually seen pictures of these "famous Indians," so they couldn't recognize them in unlabelled photos! (That's how I feel when looking a magazines filled with pictures of the latest pop "celebrities" ... ) |

If I were to choose, I would choose 2 of them
Gautama Buddha Subramanya Bharati[1] The former, I like for his absolute simplicity in religious thought. IF I were to become suddenly religious, I would choose his. Most important, you don't have fscking starve, murder your kid, sacrifice your or your neighbours animals to what you can attain quickly, through the liberal use of Kool-aid. :-) Bharati, that man was amazing. His language and poetry leaves you in tears. Far too beautiful for me to express in words. I'm truly at a loss to explain why I like him and why he should be considered among the greatest Indians. Subversive. Footnotes: [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subrahmanya_Bharati |
