NETAJI Subhash Chandra Bose

But there has historically been a conscious attempt to "forget" him - which is why Benegal aptly titled his film - "Bose - The forgotten Hero".

What a pity

The other famous Indians for me (and here the yardstick is contribution - not appearance on TV/Movie screens - Swami Vivekananda, Mother Theressa, Gandhi

how do you define indian for someone who lived before india was founded as 1 country?

gautama siddhartha - the buddha is the most important and the most famous.

BUT, he was born in what is now nepal. so if we're speaking in national terms and not it regional (south-asian for example) he WAS a nepali by birth (even though he spent most of his life in the now india).

Is the film finally out in India? Any reviews?

I would've thought Gandhi would be the greatest in the minds of the youth! cyberhippie, where did you conduct the poll?

To be honest, this isn't even a contest as to who is the most famous.
If you ask almost any non-India or non-Indianophile there really can be only one answer.

SC Bose is certainly one of the more interesting figures in modern Indian history, but unlikely ever to be particularly famous globally. Whatever your feelings about his intentions as a nationalist and his armed struggle, to many he danced with the very devil himself.

Theon I haven't held a poll as such, rather in casual conversations I found it quite alarming that Gandhiji was often dismissed out of hand as the man who split India, allowing the creation of Pakistan!
Scary but always aware of local feelings, rather than disagree I often went on to ask who would be the hero of India
Subhash Chandra Bose's name cropped up more than once!!
Of course these are random casual conversations I speak of but it did get me to wondering????

Sorry, I wasn't dismissing the poll; I just meant that outside of somewhere like Indiamike the result is a foregone conclusion.
Bose is certainly a figure whose biography I'd like to read. The myths, legends and rumour that have arisen about him are certainly very interesting as well.

Just taking a stab at all of this I went for Emperor Asoka as there is more dedicated to this person from the little that I know than anyone else.

No offence meant to anyone here, but as Bose said himself, he had to choose between two devils and he decided to use one to try to evict the other - the one that was at the time was causing more harm to his own motherland.

Many people within the Indian political establishment of the time were scared of Bose and his popularity and therefore did all in their powers to misinterpret his actions and to obliterate him from the public memory.

But the irony is, that to most of the common Indians, he is still one of the true HEroes of India's freedom struggle.

I have a confession , Bose's sword is apparently in the possession of my husband's family - his cousin to be precise. How that came to be I don't know, but his grandfather was a major industrialist in Calcutta during Bose's era so they may have known one another. I will try to find out more.
