Exporting goods
Exporting goods
Does anyone have any practical experience with exporting things like jewellery, thanka, sweaters for resale back home? I read that the limit for items to be undeclarable was rs. 25,000.
What are the hoops that you have to jump through for declaring items for commercial purposes? I'm planning on having a considerable amount of merchandise shipped home and would like to know the procedure.
Thanks,
Allan

You should contact US Customs and ask them about their procedures, if you're importing to the US

Thanks WWUSA. I have checked that end out, it seems quite open with all duties estimated at under 16.5% for the items I am interested in.
I slogged through all of the info that I could find for the export from india end, I was wondering what the reality of the situation was as often reality and legislation don't necessarily correspond in India.
Thanks for the quick heads-up!

A number of freinds of mine ahve sent stuff abck to Europe and ratehr than sending everything in one go they send it in seperate smaller packages and for customs declare it as gifts
SOme of them have stalls at markets so the quantities are large
However by doing it this way they save on tax and import charges and red tape
Im yet to hear of any experiencing problems pre or post 9/11
Anyway
Good luck with the venture

Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a' that),
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth,
Shall bear the gree an a' that.
For a' that, an a' that,
It's coming yet for a' that,
That man to man, the world, o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.

I blew a couple days in Delhi to red tape while trying to mail a package of wool shawls back to Canada. If I had it to do over would make use of a shipping agent. My time is valuable and would rather not waste it learning an obtuse bureaucracy. If you deal with a reputable firm they may be able to handle shipping for you at reasonable cost. I bought several carpets in India and the company arranged all packaging, shipping and paper work. Everything arrived in perfect shape.

I should say I've always used the Indian mail service as have friends and its always arrived ...granted a statue I sent was broken but nothing major but perhaps that was more to do with my wrapping
The mail service is really simple and not really much red tape apart from the usual postal annoyances in India.
There a few options
Sea mail ...slow ...around 3-4 months to Europe
Airmail ....As fast as a speeding as a speeding bullet...well almost...but expensive
Then the option i use ...SEA-AIR which is only slightly more than Sea mail but only takes around 5-6 weeks
Whatever you choose ...wrap it well ...remember the canvas wrap is required but any tailor will do that for you and there is always a wee guy outside more than willing to do it
Good luck
