Talking Driving in India - a video

You could think this was a funny video if you have been to India and know what the traffic chaos is like. If you haven't been yet, your first feeling is going to be horror, I think: --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjrEQaG5jPM (video needs Flash Player.)

A very very normal & relaxed scene to any Indian & you are saying this " Horror " . Then go to any big citi at rush time you will know how efficient are we as a driver / pedestrian

that traffic looks WAY too tame for it to be in Chennai, even on a weekend!

I said that "If you haven't been yet, your first feeling is going to be horror", but you can find all over the 'Net just how dangerous Indian roads are.
For example
Quote:
  • Somebody dies on an Indian road every seven minutes, and another is seriously injured every two minutes.
  • A total of 75,000 people are killed every year in India in road accidents, the highest in the world. Another 350,000 are seriously injured.
  • Apart from the human and social loss, just the economic loss arising out of road accidents in India is estimated at Rs 5000 crore per year.
  • National Highways comprise only 1.5 percent of the entire road network, but account for 25 percent of all accidents, and a shocking 34 percent of fatalities.

I had the same thoughts. the shops are all closed. this is shot on a "quite" day -- a holiday or a weekend. From the yellow autos, i thought is could be Chennai. But the bus colors point to some other city.

This looks pretty tame to me. Even I could probably manage to drive in that kind of traffic! Maybe I should post some of my Indian road videos on that website. Some of the footage on the U.S. TV show "The Amazing Race" gives a better (more typical - and more scary) idea of Indian traffic conditions than this video, IMHO!

Anyone can steer etc., the art is to guess what everyone else is going to do.
