Dreadlocks aren't really "done" for you; you need to do it yourself (or to just let it happen -- unlikely to have the most elegant result btw if you don't keep it under control. One great mat or a few separate ones is not unthinkable, I'm sure you'll have seen this on some sadhus. Some hardcore rastas might look the same), and have the right kind of hair for it (and it may take -- quite -- a while for them to start to look like anything other than terribly messy and uncombed hair, esp. if you start with longer hair to begin with). This site offers some good ins & outs on it: http://www.dreadlocks.com/.
That said, of course some hip hairdressers today will (presume to...) do it for you, or help you get started on them at least, possibly with regular after-services. I'm quite sure some of India's major cities at least, certainly the metros, will feature such. Another step would be to get them as hair extensions, done by such hairdressers as well; not exactly the real thing though, if you ask me. (Will require regular upkeep as well, btw -- they'll grow out of your hair.) But, many seem to be happy with them. Either method (so at the hairdresser's) could and likely will work out pretty costly, mind.

There are quite a few ways of getting your hair into dreads, one of them is getting a hairdresser to do it for you. It's expensive, but it will look "right" straight away.

Yup; like I said above though, it won't work on all kinds of hairs, which they won't necessarily caution you about before. Hence my comment that some may "presume" to do it for you. (And whether it works or not, it will require regular after-treatment I think.)
(The difference between natural ones or at least until they've truly set in will be obvious though I think, but, well, to each their own. In no mood for a hair fashion war here )If you have hair with not the slightest suggestion of a curl in it, it may really just not be for you. Unless you are intent on looking like a failed wannabe-Rastafarian, of course ![]() |

How odd, I'm sure your post didn't say that when I responded to it, perhaps you edited your post while I was writing mine. Or maybe I'm losing my marbles...
I have several friends with straight hair, who have both had "dread perms" at a hairdresser, followed by having their hair dreaded. While I don't think it suits both of them, it was certainly successful. The secret it seems is to go to someone with experience. Which brings us back round to the OP's unanswered question - Nevsay_D, whereabouts are you, "India" is a big place! |

You seem to be, I'm afraid, dear Haylo; unless you kept the window open for very long until or while replying, I may have added it in later, but fairly quickly so I think.
Hey, never to worry; as the Mrs. and I keep telling one another, I'll be happy to push your wheelchair for you when the time comes! You'd be welcome to join in!!* ![]() * (Old IndiaMiker's home, anyone? We were joking again the other day how there in fact exists an old artist's home here -- and how unspeakably horrible it must be to end up there. Just imagine. <Quivering voice> "Yes, I remember when I did that painting..." "... No, son, but when I on the other hand...") |

![]() NEVSAY_D, whereabouts in India are you interested in getting this done? You are more likely to get a reply if your thread title is more specific. Having said that, "fashion dreads" is a far from common look in India, so there may not be too many IndiaMike members who can help you. |

I'm quite sure I've seen some hip hairdressers in e.g. Mumbai that might fit the bill.
Kolkata (OP's profile puts him/her in the NE), no idea; long time since I've been there. You'll sometimes and unexpectedly come across these fabulously modernized non-metro cities though (Ernakulam!), so who knows? Guwahati? |

if you're not in a tearing hurry - just stop combing your hair nevsay.
umm - i dont personally know of any salon that does it... but got you something that hopefully is of some use to you... this read somewhere - that they gung beewax into your hair for instant dreaders. perhaps you can take a print out of this and go to a salon and see if they can do it. ummm - ok, happy lockings :brishti |

thanx everybody for the replies..well, I was actually thinking of getting synthetic hair for temporary dreadlocks just to see how it looks..If I like it I can probably go for the permanent ones..Moreover my hair isn't that long as of yet now...But I cant find anybody or anything on dreadlocks in India..
And about the location it doesn't really matter coz I'm traveling all time..I heard about the dreadlocks makers at the flea market in Goa but I'm not sure if they do the synthetic ones as well..I'm in Delhi right now and will be heading for the hills soon..any ideas !! |
