I would say a 50:50 chance. Thats is from personal experience. But they normally have a fan and a light.

To turn them on is a story in itself, you normally have to play a little guessing game with the 10 switches in various parts of the room.

Most rooms have sockets but by no means all!
If you think this might be a problem get your local "electrician wallah" to run you up a extension cable with socket and a bayonet fitting that you can plug into light sockets works just fine and will only cost you about 40 rupees.
They're not too bulky either. Two strands of 14 amp wire around 2/3 meters, a bayonet fitting and a socket that's as slim as a two pin flat plug.

A handy gadget!!!

cyberhippie I didnt quite get that.

Does that mean a light socket is different to the standard indian socket and I will need some sort of extension/converter?

I already have a plug that will fit indian sockets, could i just plug that into the light sockets?

No no this is just a standbye gadget, 90% of the rooms you'll sleep in will have a ordinary power socket!
The light socket idea is just in case you don't have a power socket.
Via this little gadget you can use a light socket i.e. where you would normally insert the light bulb. To get access to the mains supply!
You can then run your discman etc. Wherever you are.

Yeah really handy gadgets however virtually every room...even the bamboo shacks on some beaches have a power point and virtually every room has a ceiling fan

Whether you'll have power is another thing ...Power cuts are so regular in some places you can set your watch by them
For instance ...varkala had a nightly cut at 8:30pm which meant candle light dinners and the stars at their best so it was no big deal

Where the power cuts get bad are in places like Delhi when its hitting 40c and all the generators kick in to rasie the temp on the street to 63c ...an actual reading on a friend's fancy temp gadget

Make sure you take a torch ...A Petzl head torch is the best advice I can give anyone lol

Very few people in India actually pay for electricity. There's not much to be gained by not installing plugs in the rooms.

Cyberhippies gadget can be bought premaid i India. The one I have seen had one bayonett at one end which you plugged in to the light socket in the roof, one socket at the other end where you plugged in the light and 2 regular sockets on the side. You can use the light and plug in your laptop or whatever at the same time.
