Although Diwali has been marred by the tragedy in New Delhi, let us all pray that the New Year brings tolerance, prosperity and above all peace to all!!!

Not happy at all. Im trying to enjoy my first time in India but Diwali is the most miserable thing Ive ever experienced. Thank God its over. I HOPE its over.
For the past three days there have been fireworks going off on every street here in Jodhpur. I dont mean little popping firecrackers, but huge building-shaking explosions like cannons. I dont know what theyre called but they started going off outside my window two nights ago and went on all through the night. There was a short period of silence sometime around 1:30, but they started up again around 6:00 am yesterday. Last night they finally started slowing down around midnight. And its all being done by unsupervised little kids. Im in a guest house nearly at the base of Mehrangarh Fort. Two nights ago the sky was so filled with firework smoke I could barely see the fort. My room was also filling with smoke from the nearby explosions and Im sick as a result. Yesterday when I thought it was finally over, I stepped outside and every street was filled with piles of firework scraps and wrappers. Instead of anyone hauling it away, theyve just been burning it where it is. The noise continued throughout the day yesterday. It got so you couldnt walk anywhere because these bombs will suddenly go off next to you and permanently damage your ears. These kids seem to have no regard for whoever may be walking by and the burning fuses are hard to detect. Thank you for you kind diwali wishes and I know you mean well. Perhaps there's another side to diwali, maybe in smaller towns, but this is the only diwali I know and I'll be glad to see it go. Last edited by cyberhippie : Nov 3rd, 2005 at 20:57. |

Hi Murray,
Why we travel? Specially, in cities? I think, you will be agree with me that we travel to spend some good time (other than special assignments ). And this is really pity; your Diwali experience will not be counted as a good time. But, experiencing a ‘different’ culture is the part of the game and the spirit of Indiamike. We admit that Diwali celebration in Rajasthan is not your cup of tea but thanks for sharing your experience with us. 'Another side' of any festival may not be suitable to us but what we try to avoid, to make “fu*k Diwali” like comments to a religious festival in any country. Wish you a speedy recovery from India trip. Thanks, Somnath Last edited by cyberhippie : Nov 3rd, 2005 at 15:18. Reason: This was a reaction to the offending post, Hope you understand Somnath |

What a shame you weren't able to enjoy the experience JMurray - although I must admit the VERY loud crackers can be frightening.
However, it is a religious festival - "Festival of Lights" where goodness conquers evil.......so was it really necessary to condemn it with such strong language? Every religion/belief deserves respect, imho!! I hope the rest of your India experience will be more positive. |

Dear friends,
I have been thinking about what I wrote this morning and decided to find an internet and edit out the harsher comment. But I see someone already beat me to it. Oh well. Anyway, I apologize for that final sentence of mine. I wrote it after two nights of no sleep. Now things have quieted down considerably. Still, I cant help but wonder how people are supposed to cope with that kind of auditory assault. The other guests where Im staying also thought it was outrageous, so I know its not just me. In spite of Diwali, Im still enjoying India. I plan on having some great photos to share with you all when I get back. Sincerely, Jim |
