Discovery channel special on India on right now
I am watching a fascinating Thomas Friedman special on Discovery right now (US). It's called "The Other Side of Outsourcing."
He is interviewing teens working at local call centers in Bangalore. It is discussing the Westernization of India. He just made an interesting point: travel to the east will mean less and less as India becomes, in one Indian teen's words, "a mini America." It's on again tonight at midnight CST. I suggest watching or recording it - very interesting! |

This was very well done. I think that it was fair and encouraging, and thankfully non-political (no spin!)
Being in I.T. I have seen how outsourcing has ravaged the industry but as the head of Wi-Pro out it, the global economy is a two way street! I was really happy to see the village kids going to that great school built by the Indian man that had done very well in the U.S. |

one of Friedmans points is that now India buys a lot of American products. However, what I've seen anecdotaly, is that these "American" products are produced in India by American companies, by and large, so only the shareholders benefit. And of course shareholders can be from anywhere.

I am heavily involved with the outsourcing business, traveling to Chennai approx. every other month. Friedman's piece was balanced and on target. Outsourcing will change the lifestyle of some in India, but its strengths in terms of creating "one world" far outweigh any of the temporary pains felt in either country. One of the most insightful points was when they were discussing the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan two years ago - the business leaders in India applied pressure, which - in all probability - contributed to the de-escalation of that particular crisis. It's much harder to justify war and conflict if it impacts peoples abilities to maintain a given lifestyle or status. The world grows smaller every day, the sooner we can begin working with the Paelestinians and the Iraqi's in an "outsourcing" mode, the greater the chance that some of these conflicts may diminish.
FYI - India is hot right now, and will remain so for some time in this area, but the new surge will be in South Africa (same English skills, but inclusive of Dutch and German as well) and Mauritius... One's exposure to to cultures and peoples may vary in terms of initial introductions, but the effect is always the same ...it broadens horizons. |
