The compound that makes curry yellow could help fight skin cancer.

Researchers in the United States say curcumin, found in turmeric, interferes with melanoma cells.

Tests show that curcumin made melanoma skin cancer cells more likely to self-destruct in a process known as apoptosis.

The same team found curcumin helped stop the spread of breast cancer tumour cells to the lungs of mice.

I have been using Vicco Tumeric and Sandalwood cream for, new there was a good reason for it. many years

I dunno. I'm really skeptical of these research reports that claim eating blah blah blah MAY HELP TO cure such and such. I mean whenever you find one of these reports that state such things, there will inevitably be research in the past or future that claims the exact opposite. As well, you can find reports that state that although eating X may prevent Y, eating X may cause Z. Who are you supposed to you believe?

In my opinion, listening to your body and eating in moderation is the best thing to do.

I would also be sceptical of such reports, mostly though because they're presented by the media, which dumbs down science. Newspaper reports pounce on a single research paper and publish its conclusion under big headlines involving simplistic statements - genes for this and that, and health scares involving vaccines and autism etc. This is not how science works.

If you place credence in science in general then you believe a body of evidence not a single data point. I'm no expert but am happy to believe there's sufficient evidence that ingesting antioxidants has anti-cancer effects.

I think this is the basis for claiming curry's health benefits? Along with other spices, tea and spinach. How healthy is Indian food?!

Well, I love curry, and particularly love tumeric.
I think I'll just keep munching my Prawn Vindaloos!
Splendid!

Absolutely agree on not putting faith in a data point. However, from a scientific basis and especially as it applies to nutrition research, you will often find trends in both directions indicating that something "MAY" or "MAY NOT" be healthy for you to consume (aspartame is a recent example). Based on conflicting conclusions from scientific research, what is the general public supposed to believe from the science community?

and don't forget red wine -- good for the heart and high in anti-oxidents, as is dark chocolate (studies done on the health benefits of chocolate were done on dark chocolate).

turmeric is also used to alleviate the inflammation of arthritis.

At the rate of a glass or two per day or something yes, and according to some. Others warn against not-so beneficial effects

I guess overindulgence is never recommended -- leaving us bacchanalian inclined ones in the cold

About the title of this thread or study, it struck me there isn't really such a thing as curry (just a Western invention to cover a range of dishes) so it had me wondering. The turmeric specification helps though.

Doesn't it usually work on authority? If you can't (or have no time to) understand all the issues, you believe someone who does. So, regarding aspartame, to me the antis appear woolly bordering crackpot; the pros are establishment, probably NutraSweet funded. This isn't an issue of science but presentation, an ability which doesn't correlate with scientific expertise.

I'd still therefore insist it's the media presentation that's most troublesome. Broadcasting someone's view without balance may give authority that's unwarranted. Or gloss over the complexities. Either way scientists are always being told they should engage at the right level with the general public, which seems like a tough ask. [Actually they're first told they really have to get funding, which means engaging at the right level with science administrators - "my experiment shows curry kills cancer, give me some money"; "my experiment shows curcumin regulates NF-kappa B activity, please give me some money..."]

of course! I wasn't advocating a bottle or two a day! I've read one glass for women, two for men, daily. BTW, it's the skins of the red grapes that contain the health benefits.

Hmmm... wasn't the red wine thing financed by wine merchants?

I heard from a heart surgeon once: yes, red wine does contain stuff which is good for the heart, but it also (of course) contains alcohol, and, notwithstanding the body's ability to cope with small amounts of it, alcohol is a poison. Grape juice contains the same beneficial substances, but without the poison. And it's cheaper
