I know that any country has crime but I read that the threat of crime in India is always mentioned when reading about the west coast beaches in Goa or Gokarn and now I guess Varkala will be on the warning list if it is not already.
Are crimes I suspect usually petty theft committed by Indians who are attracted to the tourist/traveller types or is it dead beat broke westerners. In 1970 in Goa and other places in India it was the westerners that I felt were a threat - usually the ones who were strung out. I just was wondering if anybody could share their thoughts on the present situation what it may be??

There's no "situation." Personal crime statistically is rare in India. There are opportunity crimes against tourists in well known tourist areas, just as anywhere else in the world: bag snatches when you're not looking but not hold-ups or muggings (unless you are involved in something illegal, like drugs, then all bets are off). India is really one of the safest places in the world for a visitor, especially when compared to places like Rio or Capetown.

The reason Crime Stats are not known in India is probably becasue they are not collected, It's there, Look at the organised Begging and scamming its on a massive scale and more than likely run by others in the backgound, ie, people pay for patches to run their begging I think the organised crime in India is the main problem, Talk to people who try to buy a property in Goa i'ts well discussed that they ahve to pay off people to be able to proceed and then they have to make payments to be able to run businesses.

Crime In Indian ???

I realize a lot of crime in India is organized. There is a great book written in 1966 call A PORTRAIT OF BOMBAY'S UNDERWORLD -The Lawless City; Dadas - the Secret Criminals; the Bootleggers; the Dope Pedlar; the Slave Trader; the Gamester; the Beggar; the House-breaker; the Thief; the Smuggler; the Racketeer; A visit to Hell; & What the Figures Do Not Reveal.

BUT

What my question was - there is crime in tourist/traveller areas - I am especially interested in low budget backpacker areas. Are the Indians doing it or are our fellow travellers involved?

Almost all petty crimes in Goa are committed by Indians from neigbouring states. These guys come to Goa on short visits with a plan to maximize their "earnings" by robbing and running. Before the authorities can catch them these chaps have fled to their home cities.

The drug trade of course is a notable exception with many foreign nationals involved.

Indian Crime cont ?????

So Indians are attracted to the ripe pickings of the western wallet.
The drug induced crime is from the western side.
Do people get charged for stealing purses and pick pocket and what would the sentece be for an Indian.
And what would be the sentence be in India for a westerner with a simple personel posession to actually one caught selling it?

Pickpockets do get charged and jailed but they normally get the crap beaten out of them by the public when they are caught red handed. Then it is usually a case of the pickpocket being very happy to see the police coming to arrest him/her. there have been cases of pickpockets being beaten to death by an angry mob.

The law in India usually does not differentiate between possessing or selling. A jail sentence of 5-10 years is fairly common for those foreign nationals who are caught with a small amount by European standards.

I think you have to narrow this down to make it all meaningful, and the discussion seems to have done this naturally --- to talk about crimes against tourists in Goa. I'd suggest changing the thread title (can be done by a mod...) even.

pickpockets in goa, gangsters in Mumbai, chain snatchers in Chennai, property scams, fake fire extinguishers and other cons: the picture is so huge and varied...

crime in india would reduce a lot, if the govt officials could be pulled out of their addiction for bribes and black money, and if the and state and central election process could be cleaned up.

the biggest industry in india, is not steel or chemicals or software or any such thing - its "chairs".

My first reaction to the Thread title was that crime in India no doubt originates in people's hearts. Then I thought that this was not right and that crime must originate in people's minds. But, on further reflection, I have decided that most crime in India originates in people's bellies.

Organized crime is through greed at the top end, down the food chain it is more due to drug's and drink than food for thier family's it's same the world over.
People from all walk's of life manage to get job's and earn a living some just take the eazy route and make a lot of excuse's why
Every one should love animals they are so tasty

In my 36 years of life I have been in some very and lived in some very dodgy areas. I have never been the victim of a mugging or anything similar, Except in Goa! Two Indian lads on a motorbike trying to steal my bag. after a tug of war they were unsucessfull. not sure if this story is relevant to this thread or not?
such is life....
