For some time, I had this question. Is there a well defined way to become a citizen on India!
Is there a way a foreigner can become a citizen in India? Is there a well defined process which one can follow? What are the qualifications to be eligible for citizenship? Does India allow 'asylum' ? What are the countries whose citizens are not eligible to become Indians citizens? Does India allow dual-citizenship? |

Yes, there is a naturalisation procedure.
Here are the qualifications: http://164.100.10.12/cgi/nph-bwcgi/B...3D3264%26U%3D1 Asylum in India is at the Executive's mercy. There is no judicial process like in the USA or UK to determine whether a person is eligible for asylum. |

Whilst I'm not interested in an Indian Passport, in about 30 years when I retire Darjeeling will be my choice of retirement home. I wonder if and hope that they will let me take up residency at that time. I (if things carry on correctly) won't be a burden of any sort on the govt. (my medical expenses will be insured).
Let's hope so! Otherwise I'll just have to find an India wife! (Can't say I'd be too sad about that! Any free Punjabi ladies out there?)

You could ask Sonia Gandhi how she got her citizenship and follow the same procedures.

Why not try and stick it out for 10 years and then you can get permanent residency. Thats what I am going to go for anyway.

I think the easiest way is to marry an Indian citizen. Every time that I go to Darjeeling I keep bumping in to an Australian called Ian, and each time he seems to have a different wife from my previous visit. I first met him in 1999 and he had already been there for 5 years.

A strange question, was he a ginger haired fellow who toured around India on a motorbike a lot?
I meet a guy who'd gone 'local' in the same way a few years ago. He said he was married to a woman from Meghalaya. He was a smashing bloke, a really nice guy, but his story never seemed to quite added up. RTP PS I wondering if his name wasn't actually Mark and I'm doing him a huge dis-service! |
