Chewing Tobacco?

I'll be in India for 5 months and have picked up a bad habit of relying on chewing tobacco for my daily nicotene intake. Is there anything like this in India or will i have to bring my own with me when i arrive? I have been told that some Indian chew a plant (not tobacco) that is the color of blood as a stimulant or drug. Is this true and is it legal?

paan stains your teeth to be point of being utterly unappealing to anyone with any sense of personal hygiene.

i'd look at this as a great opportunity to ditch a disgusting habit.

You speak of paan (ground betel nut with lime), which is legal and popular. It will give you a buzz, though not from nicotene.

I was just wondering because i have talked to my friend who was in india for 4 months last year. He also was addicted to chewing tobacco when he left, but came back addicted to ciggarettes which i really don't want any part of. He told me they do have "dip" in India but it is hard and sugary and he hated it so he started smoking and picked up that habit. Maybe i'll just try to quit cold turkey. My family and g/f would prob appreciate that.

Can't be any worse for you then what i'm doing now though, 2 cans a week i would think. I have previously thought about not bringing any type of chew w/ me to India and still plan on that. Except for the flight over (very afraid of flying) i will prob stop chewing entirely but i will have to try Paan at least once.

Bad habit indeed: welcome to mouth or throat cancer.

It was popular among sailors once upon a time --- it is hard to light a cigarette or a pipe in a Force 9 with solid water falling around you. It was outlawed in UK long, long ago, but has sneaked back in with Paan Massala (Gutka) (which includes tobacco) being sucked by many from the Indian subcontinent.

My Ex-GF was a nurse in a dermatology clinic in London. They had a sign on their wall, You may enjoy your paan, but will you enjoy cancer?.

Oh well, for a long time my reaction to the TV programs on the dangers of tobacco was to roll up another cigarette

At the risk of being non-PC, you will get chewing tobacco called 'pugai ilai'(in Tamil). Rolled in with Betel leaves and chewed. Popular at least in Thanjuvur /Mayiladutharai Dist in TN. Lots of villages have this habit. old timers though, the younger ones are into arrack , cigarettes and paan.

In India tobacco is available. Most people chew tobacco along with beetle leaves and other things. But many chew tobacco alone(mostly old ones). As far as I know most shops that sell cigarates will have chewable tobacco with them. They sell it length wise.

Ah chewing tobacco. I must admit that i gave up ciggarettes because i started chewing tobacco. However as my partner likes to remind me i have swapped one type of cancer causing agent for another which causes 3 or more types of cancer. I would chew on average 1 tin a week. I would also advise that you bring in your own. If you give it up you can sell the rest to me. Unlike beetel nut or paan the chewing tobacco has not stained my teeth.

cheers
