Changing jobs in India

I would like to know if you accept a position with a company under a year contract and later decide the job is not to your liking will Indian immigration allow you to change jobs or does that company own you until the end of your contract?

Two questions...

1. your contractual liability to the company.

2. your immigration status.

On no.1 I have no idea.

On no2 I can tell you that it says on my Residents Permit: Change of employer or institution not allowed without prior authorisation of this office

On #1, while I am by no means an expert on Indian labor law, it is not really possible for a company to "own you" as you put it. No company can force you to work with them if you don't want to; no matter how long you sign a contract for, you can always quit as long as you give required notice (1 month? depends on your contract). You will then usually forfeit bonuses etc, but thats it. That's my understanding.

On #2, as far as I know, your employment visa is bound to the company whose contract you attached when applying for the visa. If you switch companies, you will likely have to apply for a new visa.

Anyone have any additions, corrections?

Any job contract would have a bail-out option...usually a cash consideration.
