Leave your money in the bank and take your ATM card, and a few $20 and smaller bills for emergencies. The only place I found (in 3 months) without an ATM was Mammalipuram.
My account is at Citibank, and they have ATMs in the big cities -- but there are several other banks on the Cirrus and other networks, so you can take out $100 or so at a time and not risk being heavily damaged by a pickpocket. |

I agree with Wonderwomanusa, but I'd suggest adding a few traveller's cheques to the mix. Cash and ATM cards are nice, but they're hard to replace if you lose them (although so are TCs, but that's another story of exaggeration by American Express!!).

Not too much cash...
I would not advice you to carry too much cash.
Carry what you need for a week or so, then get ur travellers cheques encashed and carry ur ATM card too. But be careful. You will always get places to encash ur travellers cheques in all major cities and tourists places so no need to worry. Police mentality is the worst you can imagine. So dont expect any co-operation God forbid anything goes wrong. Have a safe journeyand enjoy ur stay in INDIA!!! |

I was wondering is the biggest threat being mugged? Or is it more about pickpockets and not watching your bags? Generally what is the nature of crime in India, and does it vary by region? thanks again all the help has been quite helpfull, as well as reading other theads. peace

There is no threat in India, No more than there is anywhere else in the world anyway. I feel much safer walking around anywhere in India than I would walkig around anywhere in my local UK town at night. You're asking a specific question here, ie whats the biggest threat, so your answers are all going to be negative bad stuff. If you ask for the other side of the coin, ie where is the friendliest place in India the answers will be all positively good stuff. like teh saying goes if u dont look for trouble u want find any, but to be safe and avoid any probs ,carry max 100$ in 20 $ demoniation bills and the rest u can always encash as and when required from a ATM .that way u dont have to worry much at all, and can tarvel carefree.

If you don't want to use the ATM take 90% of your money as travellers cheques and the rest in cash for emergencies!!
Just change cheques as and when you need them Contrary to what you'll hear sometimes on Travel Forums pretty much anywhere you go you can change traveller cheques. When you lose cash it's ![]() If you lose cheques well you can at least reclaim the money somewhere down the line (don't believe AMEX/Thomas Cooks/mastercards promise of replacement within 24 hours the reality is a little different) Also cheques have less value to a thief cash is much more interesting!! travellers cheques
Hey thanks for the reply. i did actually go and get travellers cheques today. I'm so eager to get to India now. Atleast now i know i can't really spend them until i go away. I will take a little cash too for airports and what ever else that i might need sterling for.

I would also take about USD100 in cash. Once or twice I didn't monitor my funds carefully enough, and for one reason or another couldn't find anyone to change my travellers cheques. In some small places only banks will change travellers cheques, and you have bank holidays etc. A small amount of US money saved the day for me a couple of times - when carpet shops gave me some rupees for US dollars. I take it in $20 or $50 denominations if I can get it.
