nice post. Information regarding the carbon dating was exciting. Have two correction ofr this post
1. The existance of the mummy was not prior to 1981. when it was discovered by ITBP personel while digging an observation post very close to tibet border. The temple like structure was built subsequently.Certaily it was not existing before 1981 as has been mentioned in the post.

2. The village of Giu where u can find the mummy is in Spiti valley of India not Tibet.

3. Taking and publishing photograph of the outer structure of the temple is prohibited under indian law for security reasons as as been told to us by local army officer !!!!!!

so anyone visiting spiti should include a visit to the village giu to have a first hand look of one of the very few 'Indian'mummy. The temple otherwise remain closed and only when some one comes to visit the army people open the gate.

translation from the hindi

correct me if i'm wrong - the sign in hindi reads:

Kirpya ise mat khole, bahar se hi darshan kijiye.

please don't open this, pay your respects and obeisance from outside.

and yes maybe its the result of the occupant's being on a 163 years course of homeopathic medicines......!

i presume the sign on the right which is quite illegible says the same - but can't be sure.

Dear Dr.

I thought the saints or enlightened people of India were not burned, is that true?

Given the uncanny resemblence between the article and your picture, he looks to be a either Tibetan or Sensi.

the identity of the mummy has not been definitely established. But the place where it was found is very close to tibet.Local army people told me it is within the no mans land. So its likely to be of a tibetan.

Hello Dr. Baria

Last week on the history channel they had this very interesting programme investing the totally preserved, non embalmed mummy ??. They found out by researching with Xrays and carbon dating that this was a 44 years old buddhist monk who starved for 3 months and died 500 years ago meditating( The meditation was for the valley to flourish as told by the monks in dehradun). He has the scarf around his neck which would have strangulated him he moved from his position, his face is on his knee. He was meditating the highest form of meditation where the monk can be in very cold condition but his body generates heat which can dry wet cloth in extreme cold condition. Really facinating.

Cool Mummy

I recall seeing these pics on a documentary recently. As I recall there were two mummified Buddhist monks that were between 150 and 500 years old, one in India/Tibet and one in Japan. I'm not sure exactly how to express this, but apparently they starved themselves to death as part of a trance ritual in which they wished to "immortalize" themselves, and somehow, by doing so, they were able to self-mummify themselves. I suspect this mummified monk was the one in the Himalayas.
