ATM's are everywhere in India. Also, many businesses take credit cards.

In tiny villages in Tamil Nadu, the mobile ATM comes once a week!

Me too... I had some trouble in the smaller villages/towns, as the ATMs there weren't on the same network as mine, but all the big cities were fine.

Do carry some emergency cash backup. ATMs are almost everywhere, but you can easily find yourself stuck. I've rolled into towns before with just enough rupees to get an autorickshaw ride to an ATM.

I agree that having a little of both or some backup is the way to go. There is one ubiquitous bank in particular that never works with my ATM card, and when thats the only bank in town, I have problems. Also, if you wanted to change money in Jaisalmer fort for example, you would have to go down to town to find an ATM, while every other business in the fort itself accepts TC.

I found that either the machines, or my bank card were finicky. I'd take some cash, some traveller's cheques, and your debit. But yes, for the most part I just used debit.
