| as a guest in the Indian household I am invited to a Sunday lunch by my (fairly westernised) Indian friend - at the her home - where she lives with her large family what gift should I bring? I want them to have a good impression about their girl's schoolmates ![]() (unfortunately I don't have English chocolates or something else from Europe) also any "must not do"s? |

| Ideally its better if you take something you got from your country or from where you are coming.. Other options are: - something for the house....wall hanging, photo frames..(just thinking loud) - if they have kids then..choclates (local will do), maybe some toy or game (depending on the age group & interest) - Cake from a reputed bakery - Lastly you can take a box of sweets (mithai) from a good store. You can buy 'foreign' choclates in delhi too..check out Steakhouse in Jorbagh market..its saturday so it'll be open and nice bakery in Jorbagh market called 'Choclate Wheels' Dos & Don'ts: - Dress conservatively (..isn't becoming baseline statement with anything to do in India) - Avoid direct personal questions to 'other family' members. - Indian families tend to make you eat a lot...so go slow and don't say yes when you want to say No.

| thanks vinayverma!! I am heading towards CP this afternoon may be you can suggest good stores over there for "foreign" chocolates? "dress conservatively" - i was going to wear my new salwar kameez but i am afraid my friend will be horrified, she is westernised and i have never seen her in indian attire - she has lived abroad for some time but not her other family members thanks again guys

| What do you imagine her family will be like? (Serious question) I met quite a few families on my trip and quickly learned not to assume they would be the same as the family member who invited me. Most of the time I never took a gift, mainly because the invite was immediate. Take along some photo's from home if you have any. They wouldn't start eating until I did, not sure if it will be the same for a woman. Don't finish one thing on your plate and then go onto the next, the first thing will be topped up again, don't assume that all the food to eat in on the table/floor, just when you've had enough the local/family speciality comes from the kitchen, then the desert..... BTW, burping at the table is OK, not sure about passing wind. The food is normally fantastic, the experience even better. |

I am going there to find out. I am really intrigued, as her mother and a sister lives in New York and here in Delhi is her father and other relatives... so fairly modern.. at the same time they try to get her married off to a "suitable boy"... rejecting her boyfriend who was also of a different faith they are also quite wealthy by indian standards so i am all intrigued!! Vinay, does that store sell yogurt? seriously, I am looking to buy some on my shopping spree at CP this afternoon | |

| Volga: I'm in B'lore on an assignment and missing Delhi and everyone in Delhi...dunno when I'll be back Yogurt: Ferns 'n' Petals does not...s its more of a flourist. For yogurt..safer and better bet would be any good Indian restaurant in CP...you can try Lassi..or just plain yogurt.. For food trip..you can go to Bengali Market (which is near CP)..and try some great indian 'fast food' and spicy 'Chats'...and sweets..including Sweet Yogurt from 'Bengali Sweet house' |
