There must be a zillion theories on this, part of them on IM

One of the many explanations as to why the old city of Jodhpur would be painted blue is because it's supposed to ward off the mozzies (or was that the flies?)

Mosquitoes are generally said to be attracted to darker clothing as opposed to lighter ones so light blue would seem a pretty safe bet, for want of white.

Black

I haven't heard about an attraction to blue. Instead, what I've been told is mosquitoes like the colour black.

They supposedly have a preference for negative blood groups.

That's certainly the theory of how they home in on people: CO2 and sweat odours.

However there may well be something in the pale-blue thing. I have a pale blue mossie net* over my bed and they love to sit on it, which is great as they are easy to see and pick off with my zapper.

*mossienet: an ISP marketing specifically to insects?

Jodhpur was painted blue to keep insects away....after to keep the home cool.

So, blue clothes will keep mozzies away, and will keep u cool. ;-)

Hm yes the more popular theory however is that those houses are painted blue to signify that the inhabitants are Brahmins. Makes you wonder how this reflects on housing elsewhere though. In any case I don't think I have heard just a one theory on any phenomenon in India, it's part of the wonders of the place -- people seem to value a good story over the dull truth.

How long have you been wearing it? Mossies are attracted to sweaty smells...

Mossies, or mozzies ...I don't know, but I heard it first on IM.

Sounds like it might come from Australia, but maybe that's just because it rhymes with Aussies!

Are Aussies attracted to the colour blue? Should I change my shirt? Ahh, so many mysteries

Right, then.

If I've got this right, all I've got to do to stop attracting mozzies is this:

1. Stop exhaling CO2.

2. Stop sweating.

Sounds easy enough. Thanks for the advice, cheers.
