Appropriate gifts for family and friends in India

Hi everyone, I've been enjoying reading all the great posts and learning from the experience of those who have already been to India, and are indeed living in India, this seems like such a great forum! I was hoping someone might be able to help out with a question on 'gift etiquette'.

My husband, (who was born in India but raised in Australia and has only been back once since the age of two), and I, (who am not Indian and this is my first visit) are going to India in a few weeks, and we will be staying with some of his family in some of the places we will visit. He hasn't seen them for many many years, and they are not well off in the slightest, and to show our gratidude for them hosting us for a while we wanted to take gifts over. Can anyone recommend types of gifts that are appropriate, or is it better for us to leave money to cover our expenses? (or both...) My mother-in-law suggested I take chocolate and cheese and I'm happy to do this but I'm interested in hearing anyone else's thoughts.
