I use it a lot to phone UK from India, but I don't use it much when in London; phone cards are cheaper for phoning India from here.
A few threads on it already, including mine, here and Helicopter's here It's great if you're staying in one place especially if you've got broadband. It's probably OK if you're in a hotel where you can plug your laptop into a phone socket ---but for wanderers the local i-way is probably best.

I use it to KIT with my BF, going computer-to-computer. When I'm in India I use "skype out" to phone back to the US. It's an amazing service. Love it.

Hey Himilayas_beckon! My Skype ID is maureenattig
Yes it's a great service ! and for calling India from Ireland works out about 40 cents cheaper perminute than our "beloved" Eircom and about 70 cents a minute cheaper than using a phone card. I've been in touch with friends I haven't "spoken" to for years from Oz, NZ, France, Berlin, Muscat, SL,...you name it - it's been a wonderful tool! especially when having to make last minute business arrangements for the next move to India - loads of Hotels now have Skype too - so calling to make arrangements/reservations is fast and easy and don't cost a dime (except Internet time that is!) The new Skype phones you can buy seem to be usable all over the world too - except they're a tad bulky to find room for in the luggage - still for those not taking a laptop with them, they're a Godsend! ![]() |

Skype 1.0.0.49 OS X
I have it also but have not been using it much as the version for OS X has not been to good on the sound echo bit but a new Beta version 1.0.0.49 has been released I noticed so with this downloaded maybe the problem with internal mics and speakers will be resolved.
I reckon iChat is the best talking system but not for land lines though. |

Used Skype but has several problems in Mumbai. I have since got a VOIP wifi fone/account. These guys charge me $19.95 a month with free calling to anywhere in the States, Europe, Asia and Australia. I can use the phone at any wifi hotspot or plug into a lan cable. Works great and save me the hassle of Skype. The price includes a US phone number.

Skype
Hi
I am considering getting it but will need to get a speaker and microphone? Is the quality close to a phone call? I tried a similar thing a few years ago but the quality was awful. Also anyone using O2 mobile in the Uk can use their inclusive minutes to call India for free through one of these local numbers. Joe |

@Joepubli - Sometimes due to network congestion the delay occurs.. but usually works fine if u disconnect and call again.. uses very little bandwidth.. 4-8k per second..
