| I was told the common name for it in Bengali, but I've forgotten it, and anyway that wasn't what you wanted to know! Sorry.

| I think it may be a Mast tree (polyalthia longifolia) |

| Senior Member | Ashoka tree.. Yes, I think it is Polyalthia Longifolia too. At least in southern india, a lot of time it is identified as an Ashoka tree (ref: http://www.fairchildgarden.org/horti...bersday99.html). But then, there is also another 'asoka tree' which is shown here : http://www.holistic-online.com/Herba...Herbs/h120.htm and really is Sarca Indica. Asoka/Ashoka was the great king who gave up warring to spread buddhism. |

| Thanx all! It is indeed Polyalthia longifolia. I can now track down the seeds as I am starting a bonsai tree project of some trees from India (I have already germinated some Banyan tree seeds). While were on the subject, can you tell me the name of that tree of which the flower is used to make liquor? (not the palm from which toddy is made) |

| Senior Member | Mahua (Bassia Latifolia) is the liquor plant. |
