Very tough choice.

Kumarkom has the best hotels in kerala (on very expensive side)

Allepy is exactly opp. to Kumarkom. There are medium to higher end resorts in Allepy.

Which ever he choses ask him not to miss the one night stay in Houseboat.

Allepy resort. http://www.punnamada.com/

Hi

Allepy and Kumarakom are 2 parts of the same backwater zone.

If u in Cochin, Allepy is closer.

Also, when i went to Allepy, i took the 24 hr cruise boat cruise through the backwater from the Allepy tourism development corporation.

I was recently in Kumaraokom and it was a wonderful experience. The place is so idyllic. Stay at one of the resorts that are facing the vembanad lake.

When you visit the bird sanctuary make sure you take a boat ride in the morning, it is a very nice experience. Also visit the drift wood museum the one of a kind museum in India.

Your friend am sure will enjoy the serenity of kumarakom.

Got to Kumarakom late in the afternoon. Not much going on there in terms of places to go out (restaurant). Stayed at the Sunset Villas, I think.

We got dropped off at the bird sanctuary near closing time. Walked and walked, looking for birds (this was about 5 weeks ago). None to be seen. Then we happened upon some fellows with boats. We hired two for the six of us. I was figuring they'd take us around for a 20 minute boat ride.

We went EVERYWHERE for the next hour and a half. And we saw birds. It was fantastic.

Seems like there's much more going on in Alleppey, where our houseboat trip ended. But it's not as idyllic, of course.

Don't expect anything from Kumarakom other than rural places and backwaters. Lots of nature, lots of peace and quiet.

If it is a town you want, then Allepey is a town. Kumarakom is hardly a village...
