Advice needed
My girlfriend and I have a couple of months free in June and july so we thought 'why don't we go to Goa'. Unfortunately we now realise it is monsoon season there then. Now please understand that we are complete novices but i need to ask the question, is there any point going then?
If not, what is the rest of India like then and in particular is there any where on the west coast which would be good to visit at this time or will it be complete washout? Cheers chaps ![]() |

It's possible to avoid the worst of the monsoon. It is "supposed" to arrive in lower Kerala some time in early June but has been running late recently, so you may squeeze in a few hot and dry weeks, if you arrive at the beginning of the month. Once the rains start, they are not continuous, often just a daily pulverizing shower (though you might still have several consecutive days washed out). When you tire of the rains, you can always head east to Tamil Nadu and the other coast, which is mostly unaffected by the summer monsoon.
Remember, the summer monsoon is the SW Monsoon--it hits the SW coast and moves north to Mumbai, then drags in a northeasterly direction toward Delhi, up and over the subcontinent. You could try to chase it, like Alexander Frater. Or you could photograph it, like Steve McCurry. But heading east once it starts will keep you dry (mostly). |

My impression is that the monsoons are nice, as long as you're resourceful. It rains for just a few hours a day, usually in the afternoon. So you find a cafe and have chai and read for a while... great! Then the sun comes out, and you go swim. Not a problem. Just be careful where you swim... rip tides.
I'll be in Goa through the monsoon season... starting April 6th. |

It all depends on your luck . I never got free until that part of the year. Twice it was great and once it was dreary and miserable. Big plus is few other tourists though a lot shuts down as a result. Watch out for those riptides, evil..
