Do not show your shoulders or cleavage and avoid really short trousers or short skirts like the plague, especially in the north or in less touristic places. However if you are travelling with a man they will be more respectful with you.
My advice: buy a salwar kameez as you arrive it will cost you peanuts and it's the most comfortable thing to wear whilst in India! ![]() |

Well, the sari is perfect for covering all and any shape or size of figure. It can be tied to show off, or it can be tied to be "modest".
But I never yet saw anyone wearing one with a backpack, so just follow Nuala's advice. And check out the many other IM threads on appropriate dress for women in India

salwar kurta
Hi Nuala's suggestion is good. Wear Salwar Kurtas, loose ones, and you can even carry a dupatta! You can get nice cotton ones that look great and can also carry your backpack

the dupatta is your best friend
. buy a salwar kameez [SK] as others have advised and wear the dupatta in the front all the way to the stomach if you can get a big broad one..a U around your neck ......you can also get loose kurti's that go with jeans and pants. dont worry..there are many indian women of size too. the sarees might be big complicated for a beginner and difficult to walk around...but SKs are easy, comfortable and readily available everywhere. |

When I stayed in the Ahmedabhad area I wore pants and t-shirts the whole time and no one really seemed to care. I also saw many other indian women wearing work-out, sporty clothes and jeans. I figure people are going to stare at you no matter what you wear, so dress comfortably and modestly.
