A cut above the rest

At the risk of sounding a snob, can anyone recommend some good "expensive" hotels in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Jaipur??

We plan to go in September this year and have saved too much for too long to want to rough it. Our budget for hotels is about US$80 per night, i.e. US$40 per person.

No recommendations for the Taj or Oberoi chains please - these are way out of our budget!!

Part of the beauty of India is that you really don't have to rough it even in some of the modestly priced hotels. Use LP and go for the mid to high range pricing and you will be able to spend a lot less than $80 a night for a room and have more money to spend on nice gifts or even donate to the work this site does!

mala, i suggest the opposite. leave it till the end, you'll appreciate the luxury more.

Emma, keep in mind that the type of travellers you'll meet at Sheraton or Taj is (1) air crews (2) business ppl in suits and (3) organised tourists. not very interesting crowd! but if you are travelling with somebody then you woudn't care.

Given choice (and barring air miles I get on int'l chains) I'd rather stay in Indian owned hotels like Taj, the crowd there is much more colourful
