60s & 70s hippy trail books- any ideas ?

60s & 70s hippy trail travelers books- any ideas ?

Im looking for a needle in a haystack- anyone know where the originals, or copies, of the overland hippy trail (Istanbul to Katmandu and beyond) travelers message books might be hiding ? Im talking about the books from Yeners/the Pudding Shop in Istanbul, the Tibetan Blue, Matchbox, Annapurna or Hotch Potch in Katmandu, the houseboats in Benares and the camping in Connaught in Delhi, the Amir Kabir in Tehran and the Noor and Sigis in Kabul (likely long gone under Soviet jackboots and 25 years of war , eh ?) Theyd be a great read (Im thinking of compiling a book, though different from the excellent A Season in Heaven) and Id gladly pay for photocopies to be sent to the States. I know this is a hell of a long shot, since most of these places are mostly long gone and the original owners are also gone. Ive written my senior thesis on the Trail, Ive been collecting period guidebooks for some time, and this is sort of the Holy Grail of Hippy Trail lore (as opposed to Grail lore I suppose). Also looking for the BIT guidebook and any of Tony Wheelers Across Asia on the Cheap originals as well. ANY ideas, email addreses, etc would be wonderful, or just general help .

several trail vets have written about their experiances here, but you may have to do some digging thru the archives

Oh Ed, you're killing me (in a good way) --I did that overland journey in 1975 and I'm having flashbacks (not drug induced ) with all those places you mentioned. Spent some time in the Pudding Shop in Istanbul, stayed at the Amir Kabir in Teheran, and other places you didn't mention (like Chicken Street in Kabul).

The bad news is I don't have anything that you are looking for. I did start a diary but gave up writing in it after the first couple of weeks. BUT I am moving in the next few months, and if anything turns up from back then, I'll let you know. I barely even have any photos--I do have some slides and recently got a scanner, so I might try to get them onto my laptop. We traveled very light & cheap and keeping records didn't seem important. But it's all still in my head.

You've really made my day, Thank you

Such a shame no one travelled with a camera in those days I also hunger after images of those heady days!

I did have a camera and I think 3 rolls of slide film (for 3 months )...I just wasn't in the camera habit. Developing film seemed like a real extravagance, like eating good food or buying anything!! I've certainly made up for that in later trips . Still, the memories are mine forever!

Camel girl I don't know if you ever caught this thread as you didn't contribute and you are very well qualified to do so.
So here's a link to some more nostalgia!

Thank you cyberhippie. I didn't see that because I only joined IM earlier this year.

I just read most of it and it's excellent. I honestly don't think I could add anything as everyone there when I was said it all!!! It did make me VERY nostalgic.

I used to think I should write a book, I had some great stories, but I'm not a writer and life went on. I have been to India 6 times but the book would only be about my 1975 and 1980 trips. They were the most life changing.

BTW my avatar is a photo of a calender I got in 1975/6 in India. It's a fantastic advertisement for Gripe Water. It's the best thing I brought home and I can't believe it's still in one piece!

When i was a young lad .Wasn't really a hippy, left home and "took to the road" ,bedroll on back, hair beggining to grow, but the title was "beatnick" "Hippies "was some word from the states , didn't know what they were. Ended up in a seaside town in cornwall called Saint Ives ,it did attract "Hippies" and other undesirebles ,as we were described by the signs over the doors of the restaurants shops etc ,forbiding us entry After a year or two after generaly messing around somebody made the bright suggestion "lets go to India" so one freind and myself collected some moneys ,not a lot. Managed to get a copy of my birth certificate and forged my fathers signature on the passport application.and away we went. Two young lads ,hair down to shoulders (these were the days when you were yelled at in the street for hair below the ears) After a few weeks 3/4 0r more? arrived in Istanbull tired and confused .I did not know of any books or travel guides it was all word of mouth >stayed in the Gulhani Hotel ,just around the corner from the Pudding shop and survived .By this time the money was running out ,but this was Istanbull "any thing is possible" now where have i heard that before?? India was looking like it could be just a little to far . By this time i was on my own so Israel seemed like a good bet .Kibbutz etc. Raised a bit of cash by the change money bit in the pudding shop and set sail Shalom!! Spent the next few murky years back and forth over the same route ,never made it to India ,but that has been rectified later . Bom Shankar

I always carried cameras and am now trying to wade through a mountain of negatives that never got printed. The black and white negs have survived very well, but the colour are showing their age. Will post a few if there's interest. Did a photo essay on carpet weaving back in the 70's that I've started uploading.
Carpets...
Ran across an old negative recently... It shows a traveller (English) cooking up a goolie of opium. He swore that it was the best thing for long bus trips and loose bowels.....
Still have my copy of "Golden Guide to South & East Asia" from the 60's wheeee..... Nirula's in Delhi was only asking 27 Rps for an AC single , but you only got around 7.5 Rp to the $.... although sometimes almost double that on the black market if you knew where to look. Ah, the good ole daze......

I keep mentioning a book on this website 'Goa freaks', by Cleo Odzer.
The book is about hippies in India, specifically Goa.
It's an interesting book.
