6 weeks to go and feeling super nervous!
Hi everyone
![]() Up until now my excitement/nervousness ratio has been hovering around 70/30, but something about the 6 week mark has changed everything and now I think I'm somewhere around 40/60 excitement to nervousness! So nervous that I am using ratios to dissect my feelings! Leaving home, friends, family, and a wonderful boyfriend... to move to India for a great job and an exciting adventure, but with very little idea of what to expect, as I have never been there. Is anyone feeling the same way, or have any of you felt this way in the past? How did you convert your fear and nervousness back into excitement and bravery? I'm not going to change my mind as I'm well past the point of no return and still determined and excited, but I'm definitely having cold feet... |

No no, be EXCITED!
Oooh I'm so excited for you, it sounds like you're going to have a life-changing experience, really!
I don't know how many people would have made the decision to live in India for a year, away from loved ones etc, and its definitely a commendable one to have made! Don't stress too much (understatement I know!!) there will be lots of people to help you adjust and hey, there's always a phone call to family if it all gets too much! Cheers, F. PS < 7 weeks to go for me - although my 4 week trip pales in comparison to yours! I'll be in Delhi in Jan (11 days total) so send me a message if you feel like a girly talk over some chai or just a whinge! ![]()

You are not alone!
Just know that you have friends here whenever you need to let off steam, you are not alone.
I don't know how to convert the feelings of nervousness into bravery - it just sort of happened for me when I left England not to return for a veeeery long time this past January. That sinking feeling in your stomach turns to tears and then somehow on the plane I just thought, come on girl sort yourself out - this is what you wanted to do!!!! Deal with it!! Then I felt ok again. For about 5 minutes!! No, but seriously saying goodbye to family and loved ones is very hard, but they will still be there for you in spirit, on the phone, on the internet, in your heart ... On a practical note making lists of the things you need to do before you go helped me brain-dump all my worries and ensure I didn't forget anything too important. Keep a notepad by the side of your bed so that when you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat or can't sleep for thinking you can write it down. You'll be fine, everything you are feeling now is part of the journey. Be ![]()

Thank you, lovelies, for your kind words of encouragement in my time of freaky nervousness. I am feeling a little better, as you have all acted as the voice of reason my brain seems to have lost for the time being...
Fresa -- It's great of you to be kind and excited on my behalf and I feel better already. ![]() Jyotirmoy -- I am off to Delhi. I will be based there, but I've been told that my job will involve 'a fair amount of travel' so I'm excited to see where else I end up. Katyrafi -- You have perfectly described some of my late night tossie-turnies. I agree that compulsive list-making is a great way to deal with it, but I think I'm running out of lists to make... I look forward to telling myself to get sorted when I'm a nervous wreck on the plane, though ![]() Thanks again ![]() |

Hi Bruniskina,
Don't worry at all! I have been here in Delhi for just gone 1 month, with a year to go, and am having a great time. While India can seem a bit confronting, after a week or so you will be amazed at how comfortable you will feel. From the sounds of things, you will be coming across to work with a good company, so hopefully they will set you up with everything you require. As for what you are leaving behind, I can symapathise, as I have a fiance and great friends waiting for me back home also. If I am ever feeling down or missing them, I can always call them. One thing, make sure you have a webcam (and they do) so you can speak with them via video on Messenger. Is much better than just phone conversation, and compared to the phone the price is right too (FREE!). Hope this helps warm those feet back a bit. Good luck with the move. |

Flying from Toronto is a long flight, especially if you are so excited you don't sleep the few nights before. If, when you arrive, you feel a bit panicked, wait a while and it will probably subside. Lack of sleep with some culture shock thrown in can add to your feeling nervous upon arrival. After a few good sleeps and some food you will feel 100% better. There are internet places everywhere so you can be in touch with home. You may not feel any of this when you first arrive, just excitement about what's to come. Also, if you are overwhelmed there are many people on IM to help you out. I have 6 weeks to go to and it's not long! Have a great flight and enjoy your time in India.

Awesome. I am sure you will have a wonderful experience. If you don't mind me asking, what field are you going to be working in?
