pinkyp,
Which city you are flying in to? If it is Mumbai then simply follow the Konkan coast. Mumbai - Goa - Gokarna - Mangalore - Cochin - Alleppy - Kovalam - Trivendrum - Mumbai. But remember that in August you can get moderate to heavy rainfall in the Konkan region.

The weather can’t be guaranteed, but, how’s about…

A week in Goa. You can get cheap flights to Goa - maybe buy a 21 day package tour from www.sunmaster.co.uk if a cheapie is available at the right time. You don’t have to use the accommodation for all 21 days!

Fly down to Cochin for a few days.

Drive up to a hill station – possibly Munnar, Thekkedy (Periyar wildlife sanctuary)

Drive to Alleppey and take a Kettuvallam houseboat cruise for a night or two (very romantic and relaxing!)

Back to Goa and slob on the beach for another week

Fly home.

Thankyou for your suggestions! much appreciated...
do you think that £800 max would be enough for this trip....

also, do you think its worth just sticking to this region and not attempting chennai etc due to time restrictions...

have you any comments on the islands of Lakshadweep??? diving and scenery???!!!

Lakshadweep is very beautiful but independent travel may not be possible. There are organised trips from Cochin. The most popular ones are the ones where u stay & sleep in the ship & visit islands by the day. The resort at Bangaram is expensive but a stay here is fantastic.
As john has suggested a forray in to the hilly plantations of Kerala can be included.
Since u have only 3 weeks better restrict your trip to this.

The beach won't be very "slobable" in August. The sea is still very dangerous.

i was travellin for almost 3 months in south india -- my route was

bangalore - could stay for couple of days
coorg (hill station with rolling coffee plantations n good trekkin options)nagarhole national park(i suggest u skip it)
mysore (good small town with palaces n markets, very much liked by backpackers
humpi- very beautiful place with rock temples, rocks n more rocks . is a unesco world heritage site
gokarna - beautiful beaches n a temple town
kochin- beautiful town with nice temples, synagogues, palaces etc.
munnar- hisll station
kumily- periyar wildlife scanctuary
varkela beach- small yet beautiful beach over looking the cllifs but the curretns in the water are strong ..just be a bit cautions

its difficult to fit in all in the 3 weeks ..i suggest do i stretch like maharashtra , goa n kaenataka or karnataka n kerala
